Amelia's eyes widened in shock as she paled. How did Gideon know about her child? But then it hit her. If Gideon had managed to find her, he likely also discovered she had a child.

Amelia instinctively tried to close the door, but Gideon quickly blocked it with his hand.

"Were you crying?" he asked, noticing the tear stains on her face. It was obvious she had just been crying.

Amelia quickly wiped her eyes. "No, I was just cooking and got a little smoke in my eyes."

Gideon took advantage of the moment to push the door open and stepped into the living room. Amelia tried to stop him, but it was too late.

Eli, who had heard the commotion, opened his door and came out, locking eyes with Gideon.

Gideon paused, taking in Eli's appearance. He was tall for his age, with a slightly malnourished frame. His features were well-defined and bore a strong resemblance to Amelia, except for his eyes which did not resemble hers. Instead, those eyes looked remarkably like those possessed by the Gideon family.

Eli was also sizing Gideon up. He had never seen a man visit his mother before. Though he didn't recognize the brand, he could tell from the man's attire that he was wealthy.

Recalling his classmates' taunts that his mother was someone's mistress, Eli furrowed his brows together. His gaze toward Gideon grew more hostile.

Seeing his gaze land on the photos, Amelia quickly added, "We later divorced, and Eli stayed with me."

Gideon turned his attention back to her, studying her face as if he were trying to discern the truth. After all, she had been so firm when she confessed her feelings to him, saying he was the only one she would ever love and that she would never have feelings for anyone else.

But people changed.

"When did all this happen?" he asked.

Amelia hadn't expected him to probe, so she evaded the question. "It was a long time ago. It's nothing worth discussing. And you? Are you married? Do you have kids now?"
