Amelia tried to change the subject, but Gideon pressed on, "I asked when you got married."

She confessed her feelings to him 12 years ago, and her son was now 11. Did she rush into marriage with someone else right after he rejected her? Something didn't add up.

Amelia grew uncomfortable under his intense gaze and nervously bit her fingernail as the atmosphere grew tense. Just as she was struggling to answer, her phone suddenly rang, providing an escape. It was her alarm, set to remind her of her 8:00 pm shift at the local post office.

"Sorry, I have to head to work now. I don't have time to entertain you, so please see yourself out." She turned off the alarm and asked him to leave.

Without waiting for an answer, she hurried back into the kitchen to finish cooking. Then, she knocked on Eli's door, calling him out for dinner. "Eli, dinner's ready. Eat it while it's hot. I'm heading to work, and I'll check your homework and the apology letter when I get back."

Gideon glanced at the meal Amelia had prepared—scrambled eggs with tomatoes, tofu, and some vegetables. It was a modest meal for a growing child, which explained Eli's thin frame.

"Where do you work? I'll drive you," Gideon offered.

He didn't need to ask why she was working so late. The apartment and meal were enough to tell him what he needed to know.

"There's no need. It's just a short walk," Amelia declined. She checked the time and realized she didn't have time for dinner.

Gideon didn't insist but followed her downstairs. She led him through a narrow alley between apartment buildings until they reached a small courier station.

Amelia worked here part-time on the night shift, handling tasks such as entering orders into the system, sorting packages onto shelves, and occasionally lifting heavier parcels. Her shift ran from 8:00 pm to midnight. It was a four-hour shift.

"Really?" Rose quirked a brow. "You came here together, and he's been standing there watching you all this time. Don't tell me you're strangers. Or is he a secret admirer? You are beautiful, after all, so it's only natural. Want me to go check for you?"

As Rose started to head out, Amelia grabbed her. "Rose, stop it!"

"Are you shy? Then spill the truth!" Rose teased.

"I…" Amelia was about to explain when she caught Gideon out of the corners of her eyes. He answered a phone call, and after a brief exchange, he turned and finally walked away.

With him gone, Amelia breathed a sigh of relief. "Really, I don't know him!"
