Seeing this, Everly panicked even more. She wanted Hera dead, but she certainly didn't want to die with her! She struggled as she tried to climb up Hera's body and reach the rope ladder. But Hera wasn't going to let her have her way. As the two fought, those above watched with hitched breaths.
"Captain Ludden, the situation doesn't look good. Requesting permission to go down and bring Ms. Hera up safely," one of the soldiers said into his earpiece.
Aaron responded, "Approved! You must bring her back safely!"
"Yes, sir!" Just as the soldier finished gearing up and prepared to descend, the rope holding both women suddenly snapped!
Their bodies fell, and Everly screamed in terror.
Hera seized the moment and kicked her away. She pulled out the dagger from her thigh and stabbed it into the cliff wall. It didn't hold at first, and after two or three tries, she finally wedged the blade into a crack in the rock, halting her fall.
Hera clung to the dagger. Looking up, she saw that the top of the cliff was a distance away, and the rope the soldier was using wasn't long enough to reach her. Below was a bottomless drop.
Everly had already fallen further down and was caught on a tree branch below.
"Hera! Are you okay?!" Aaron's panicked voice came through her earpiece.
"I'm still alive. Your soldier's rope is too short. Do you have a helicopter?" Hera replied calmly.
Hearing her composed tone, Aaron couldn't help but admire her. Most people would be scared of falling off a cliff, but she was still level-headed.
"Yes, it's around here. I'll call for it right away. Just hang in there!" He quickly made a call.
Aaron, hearing the distant shout, froze in shock before sprinting toward the cliff with his team.
Hera calculated her landing and dropped onto the branch clinging to the rock wall. The entire tree shook violently. Everly, who was at the far end of the branch, slid downward, her legs dangling in mid-air.
Everly clung desperately to the branch. Although it had caught her, she was injured. The branches had pierced through her body, leaving her in immense pain and on the verge of losing consciousness. The fierce resolve she had shown earlier was completely gone.
As the branch tilted further downward, Hera noticed the tree roots were slowly pulling out of the rocks. There was no soil here for the roots to anchor into, and it wouldn't be long before they both fell again.
Either they both fell and died together, or one of them could go down, giving the other a chance to survive until help arrived.
Hera's gaze hardened at Everly.
