Bernard's actions reminded Lilith of how James used to treat her. As someone who had been through it herself, she could tell that Bernard genuinely cared for Hera. She began to feel more at ease.
Maybe they had misunderstood the relationship between Bernard and Hera after all these years. As long as Hera was happy, Lilith would support her and convince James to do the same.
After the family finished their dinner, they eventually left.
That evening, after Hera finished bathing Dora and waited for Dylan to finish his bath, she was about to take them to bed when Bernard eagerly took Dora's hand. "Mommy is tired. I'll take you two to bed."
"Yay! Daddy, will you tell us a story?" Dora asked excitedly.
Bernard hummed. "Yes."
"Awesome!" Dora cheered, then waved to Hera. "Mommy, you rest early! I'm off to bed now. Goodnight."
Hera knew Bernard wanted to get closer to the children, so she didn't stop him. She waved back. "Goodnight."
Two rooms in the western wing had been converted into bedrooms for the children. Dylan's room was on the left, and Dora's was on the right.
Dylan quietly went to his room while Bernard took Dora to hers. Her room was decorated entirely in pink. Dora took off her shoes and climbed into bed. Bernard tucked her in. "What story do you want to hear?"
Dora pouted. "I want to hear 'The Bossy CEO and His Wife.'"
Bernard fell silent. What in the world was that? He suddenly grew curious about the kinds of stories Hera told the kids.
"What stories do Mommy usually tell you?" he asked.
"I'm tired of Mommy's stories. I want something new. Tell me a story about you being the bossy CEO!" Dora said, pouting.
"And after he got better, he saw that his wife didn't leave him despite being hurt, so he was touched and loved her even more. Isn't that how those stories go?"
Bernard was speechless.
"Where did you learn that?" he asked.
"A lot of novels are like that." Dora realized she might have slipped up and quickly corrected herself, "No, no, I made that up myself."
It seemed he needed to monitor what the kids were reading and make sure they weren't exposed to such things too early.
Bernard sighed. "Let me tell you the story of 'The Ugly Duckling' instead..."
After much effort, Bernard finally got Dora to sleep. He then went to check on Dylan. He found him lying in bed, propped up with a laptop. He was clearly not in the mood to sleep.
