Chapter 33 novel Under the Veil I Rule

Amara paused at the entrance, her mind replaying the sound she just heard. She blinked, wide-eyed and incredulous.

The next second, someone grabbed her arm and spun her around. The man removed his sunglasses to reveal a pair of angry eyes as he snarled, "Why'd you hit me? That hurt a lot!"

Amara was utterly speechless. She reversed her grip on his arm, pulling him into the empty passageway, and hissed, "Keith, are you out of your mind? Why are you following me?"

She couldn't believe it. The person who had been trailing her was none other than Keith. Despite the years she spent hiding behind her scars, Amara had always been sensitive to unwanted attention, thanks to her striking figure. So naturally, she was furious.

Keith pulled down his mask, his voice defensive. "Who's following you? I'm just heading home. What about you? Why are you here? You don't even live here!"

"I do live here."

That shut Keith up. Watching Amara walk into the building where he lived, Keith had assumed she was finally coming to apologize. But she lived here too?

Amara watched the disappointment play out on Keith's face and explained helplessly why she had rented an apartment here as she headed up the stairs. It turned out they both lived in the same building, on the same floor, directly across from each other.

As they reached their doors, Keith grabbed her arm again and said in an assertive tone, "You hit me for no reason today. I need compensation, why don’t you buy me dinner?"

Amara gazed at him, distaste flickering in her eyes as she unlocked her door and replied in the way she was used to when they were kids. "Fine, fine. It's not like I'll starve after sharing my food."

Amara wasn't angry with Keith for taking her phone. Truthfully, she wanted to say no herself. Still, she gave Keith a light smack. "What are you doing, snatching my phone like that?"

She was abstracted, her mind drifting back to what Will had just said. Why was Finnian so keen on her cooking? The last time, he wanted her homemade chicken soup, which had puzzled her then too.

Did Finnian ask her to cook because he thought of her as some kind of homemaker over the past three years? Was she just a cook or maybe even a maid in his eyes?

These thoughts tightened Amara's grip, causing the lettuce she held to crumple. Meanwhile, Will stared at his now dark phone screen, utterly bewildered.
