Lucy stood at the door of the hospital room. After taking a deep breath, she entered with a forced smile. "What do you want for dinner tonight? I'll make it for you."

"Anything's fine," Hugo replied, craning his neck to look past her. Noticing Abigail was missing, he asked, "Where's Abigail? Did she leave?"

"Yes," Lucy said with a nod. "She had something to take care of. Didn't you hear her?"

Hugo's mood visibly shifted. "I heard. I just wanted to spend a little more time with her—just ten more minutes. You could've helped me out, you know."

Lucy blinked in confusion. "The person you called your beloved—was it Abigail? Don't you know she's engaged to Taylor?"

"Yeah, I know. So what? I've already looked into it. They broke up a few days ago. Abigail's single now, so what's wrong with me pursuing her?"

"Are you serious?"

"Absolutely. I'm completely serious."

Lucy found herself at a loss for words, caught off guard by the tangled web of their relationships.
