Mavis was taken aback when she first saw his body, not expecting such a sight. She could not quite tell if she felt sympathy, but it certainly made her uneasy.

Instead of answering, she asked, "You're born into the prestigious Nicholls family, and the whole Nicholls empire is yours. Who would dare harm you like this?"

"My background is more complicated than you might think," Nathaniel replied, lowering his gaze in contemplation.

After a moment, he summarized briefly, "In my youth, I was reckless and offended people I shouldn't have. I was sent to a high-security prison and faced my sentence there."

Hearing this, Mavis recalled Sheena had once hinted that Nathaniel had done things to harm Elliot in the past. Consequently, Elliot retaliated harshly, but after going through a lot together, they eventually became friends and let bygones be bygones.

Realizing this, Mavis felt her sympathy fade and thought Nathaniel had brought this upon himself. She withdrew her hand and turned away from his scarred body.

When she spoke again, her tone was sarcastic.

"Then you deserved it. You must've been quite the troublemaker when you were younger to end up with such a harsh punishment."

Nathaniel just smiled, brushing off the past trauma.

He gently caressed her cheek with the back of his hand and asked, "Now that you've seen this unsightly side of me, do you hate me even more? Do you want to run far away from me?"

"You've hit the nail on the head. I—"

Before she could finish her sentence, Nathaniel leaned in and silenced her with a passionate kiss.

As Mavis struggled to free herself, she accidentally hit the shower switch behind Nathaniel. Water cascaded down, instantly drenching them both.

However, Nathaniel showed no intention of letting her go. His kiss was demanding, leaving no room for escape as he claimed every inch as his territory.

Before long, Mavis felt the air around her grow thin. The sound of the shower was deafening, and the water temperature was unexpectedly perfect—neither hot nor cold.

She felt like she was drowning, unable to find the way out.

Until…

"Mommy! Daddy!"

The apartment was small, and the child's cries immediately reached the bathroom. Despite the loud shower, Mavis heard it clearly.

She snapped back into reality and pushed Nathaniel away with all her might. Then, she turned off the shower and glared at him angrily.

His lips quivered as he spoke, "Mommy, I thought you didn't want me anymore. I'm a good boy. Please don't leave me…"

He hiccupped between sobs, his eyes red from crying.

Mavis believed he must have had another nightmare, and her heart was aching.

She kissed away his tears and comforted, "How could I ever not want you? You're my precious baby. I could do without Nathaniel, but never without you."

Nathaniel limped out of the bathroom just in time to hear Mavis's words, and his face darkened.

People said children could tie down a wife, but to him, Callum seemed more like a stumbling block in his pursuit of Mavis.

He cleared his throat to announce his presence.

Mavis heard the sound and half-turned, her gaze meeting his from across the room.

"I can't walk properly. Come help me," he said weakly.

Mavis did not move. Instead, she gave him a look as if telling him to handle it himself before turning back to Callum and continuing to soothe him to sleep, completely ignoring Nathaniel.
