"Good eye, kid!" Bear laughed heartily, flattered by the praise.
He could not help but think Slim was wrong about Callum's ability to escape, believing that a young child could not possibly be that cunning. He would have to set Slim straight when he returned.
"Hey, are you hungry? This hotel's buffet is the best in Svelton. All-you-can-eat seafood and it's free!" Callum said enthusiastically.
A free buffet?
It was music to a foodie's ears, and Bear was practically drooling.
"Do you want to try it?" Callum suggested casually, careful not to sound too eager and raise suspicion.
As expected, Bear hesitated. If he went, he would have to leave Callum alone in the room, which he could not explain to Slim and Tiffany.
"There's fragrant roast goose and pot roast waiting for you. If you're worried, we can go together. Actually… I'm starving too. I haven't had dinner yet," Callum added, patting his empty stomach pitifully. That other guy won't return for at least half an hour. There are lots of people buying food at this time."
Callum's enthusiastic gaze suddenly turned doubtful as he looked Bear in the eye. "Or is it that you can't make decisions on your own? If so, we can wait for the other guy to come back. It's just a shame about all that delicious food. It'll be gone after dinner time," Callum said, hitting all of Bear's weak spots.
Bear slapped his thigh, throwing caution to the wind. "Nonsense! Who says I can't make decisions? Nobody tells me what to do. Let's go, but be quick about it. Don't cause any trouble or say anything stupid. Behave yourself, or you'll regret it. Got it?"
"Don't worry. I'm only five. How could I possibly outrun you?" Callum reassured him.
Despite this, Bear did not let his guard down. Before leaving, he made Callum wear a mask and hat to avoid recognition. He also tore the bed sheet into strips, tying one end to his wrist and the other to Callum's to keep the boy within sight.
"Stay close, you little rascal." Bear glared at Callum threateningly.
Even though the hotel restaurant was full of tempting dishes, he kept a watchful eye on Callum behind him.
"Yes. Don't worry, I'll be good," Callum replied, following closely and even helping carry plates of food for Bear.
Bear's expression soured, and his appetite suddenly diminished. Fearing the kid might soil himself and ruin his meal, he grabbed Callum by the collar and headed for the restroom.
Since they were still tied together by the cloth strip, Bear figured Callum could not escape. He let the boy enter a stall alone while he stood outside, scrolling through funny videos on YouTube.
However, after watching a few short videos, there was still no sound from the stall.
Bear grew suspicious and asked, "Hey, kid, you done yet? Did you fall in or something?"
There was no answer, but the cloth strip was still connected to the stall. Bear sensed something was wrong and cautiously approached the stall door, pressing his ear against it.
"Kid?"
There was not a sound from inside.
