Bear kicked the stall door hard, and it swung open. However, Callum was nowhere to be seen, and only a strip of cloth tied to the door.
Bear stood there stunned but soon noticed the bathroom window was wide open and rushed over to take a look. He did not see any signs of Callum. Even though they were on the third floor, he was sure the kid had escaped through the window.
"You little shit! Just wait till I catch you. I'll beat you to a pulp!" Bear snarled in frustration as he turned and ran out to give chase.
After Bear's footsteps faded, Callum finally uncovered his mouth in the neighboring stall. He gasped for air, relieved that Bear had fallen for the window trick.
Ever since he was thrown off a roof, Callum had developed a crippling fear of heights. The mere thought of looking out a high window made him shudder, let alone actually climb out one. Luckily, Bear did not know him well enough to realize that.
Once he was sure Bear was long gone and the coast was clear, Callum cautiously emerged from the stall. Then, he took off running as fast as he could.
…
When Bear rushed out of the hotel entrance, he nearly collided with Slim, who was just returning.
"Whoa, Bear! What's the rush?" Slim asked. He was carrying three large bags of steaming takeout, a cigarette dangling from his lips, looking utterly relaxed.
Bear was so furious he could barely speak. "Slim, he's gone! The kid escaped!"
He could not believe that a kid that age could be so cunning.
"Damn it, Bear! Is food all you ever think about? You couldn't even keep an eye on a five-year-old? Were you dropped as a child?" Slim was tempted to slap him.
Bear hung his head, not daring to say more. "What do we do now? Ms. Sullivan said that the kid knows about her secrets. If she finds out we lost him, we're dead."
"What else can we do? We have to find him, fast!" Slim glanced at the park nearby. "Come on, let's cut through here."
Taking a shortcut would give them a better chance of intercepting Callum.
The three stood out starkly, frantically searching with worry etched on their faces.
…
For all his stamina, Callum was still just a kid, and he could only run so far. After sprinting for what felt like forever, he was completely spent. He glanced back to see Slim and Bear still chasing him, quickly gaining ground.
Tired as he was, Callum forced himself to keep moving. Unfamiliar with the park and having run mindlessly in his panic, he ended up in a secluded area with few people around, cutting off his own escape route.
Sure enough, he soon found himself face-to-face with a high brick wall, and there was nowhere left to run.
"We got you now, you little brat!"
"Yeah, think you can trick me, huh? We'll teach you a lesson you won't forget!"
