Chapter 214
Determined to leave Leanna behind, Scarlett swung onto her horse and galloped off at full speed, riding for what felt like a great distance before finally reining in.
A small wild boar appeared ahead. Scarlett immediately nocked an arrow, but to her astonishment, she saw Leanna still sitting leisurely on her horse out of the corner of her eye, munching on peanuts. “You!” Scarlett said, clenching her jaw. Seeing Leanna distracted and her bow out of reach, Scarlett thought, ‘This is my chance!‘
Scarlett’s eyes flashed cunningly; in a heartbeat, she drew her bow and loosed an arrow at the wild boar, intercepting its projectile mid–air before it could reach its target.
Despite the bow inexplicably returning to Leanna’s hands, she was already munching on peanuts again; after a long, frozen pause, Leanna exploded in fury, screaming, “You vile wench! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!”
Scarlett swiftly drew an arrow, aimed directly at Leanna, and released it without hesitation; however, before the arrow could even graze Leanna’s clothing as she casually snacked, it was effortlessly shot down.
“Argh!” Scarlett threw her head back and screamed in fury. She had completely lost it.
“My Lord, Ms. Shaffer is behaving erratically! You must see her immediately!” This urgent report nearly drove Diablo mad.
Despite half a day’s effort, not a single one of his arrows had hit its mark–not one! Nearby, Leanna remained lounging on her horse, watching him with an enigmatic half–smile, proving impossible to shake off.
“My Lord, please check on Ms. Shaffer immediately! A crowd has gathered, and everyone is watching!” the anxious subordinate urged. Left with no choice, Diablo spurred his horse into a gallop toward the commotion.
Scarlett sat on the ground, wailing hysterically, “I want to go home! I want to go home! That is so o unfair!”
As Diablo dismounted, Scarlett remained seated, her eyes fixed on him as she sobbed uncontrollably. “Diablo, please, I want to go home!” she cried, her voice breaking with grief. “Take me home–I never want to see that woman again!”
The crowd had abandoned their hunt entirely, utterly engrossed in the unfolding drama; there are games to hunt every year, but a spectacle like this was a rare treat. The Shaffers, while not royalty, were still among the most prestigious nobility.
Scarlett was having a full–blown tantrum on the ground, utterly losing her composure and destroying the sophisticated image of a noblewoman she had carefully built throughout her life.
Hearing the commotion, Waldo hurried over, wondering, “What on earth is going on?”
Nearby, Jessica and Garbisch rode up at a leisurely pace. Jessica looked down at Scarlett, who was sitting on the ground, and teased, “Well, Ms. Shaffer, how was that? Enjoyable enough for you? We have all the time in the world–more than happy to keep you company!”
