Chapter 240
Leon set down his cup and was about to rise when Magnus leaned in and whispered urgently, “Your Highness, you’re injured. The wolves out there are vicious, it’s too dangerous for you to go.”
Andrew turned anxiously to Jessica. “Ms. Yates, did you really run into that pack of black wolves? How dangerous was it in there, really? Please, tell wor-
Jessica stood up and approached the King, leaning in respectfully. “It was indeed extremely dangerous, Your Majesty. I barely escaped the wolves‘ jaws, and I owe my survival to my elder brother and several aunts who came to my aid.”
“How is my Waldo now? Tell me, quickly!” Adele demanded frantically, her face flushed with anxiety.
‘My Waldo’s fate is still unknown, yet that damned woman acts like it’s none of her concern!‘ Adele fumed inwardly.
“Your Grace,” Jessica replied calmly, “I haven’t seen Waldo, so I truly have no knowledge of his current situation in the wolf–infested woods.”
“But he charged into the wolf pack to rescue you!” Adele jabbed an accusing finger at her, her voice trembling with fury.
Jessica maintained an air of serene indifference. “Your Grace, I never sought Waldo’s assistance. This is hardly my concern.”
The onlookers gaped in astonishment, their minds swirling with questions.
They thought, ‘Waldo has stumbled into a pack of wolves, his life hanging in the balance. Yet Miss Yates remains shockingly calm and composed, not showing the slightest sign of distress. How could she be so indifferent at a time like this?
‘Just half a month ago, didn’t she risk her life to rescue her beloved Waldo, braving death alone on that perilous journey?
‘How could she be so utterly indifferent to Waldo’s situation at a time like this?‘
Suddenly, a figure burst out from the direction of the tents, shouting frantically as she ran, “Jessica! What’s happened to Waldo? I heard he charged into the wolf pack, did you lure him there? Speak now!”
Jessica didn’t even need to look up to know it was Priscilla.
Jessica didn’t even deign to glance at Priscilla. Instead, she kept her gaze fixed on the King and continued, “Your Majesty, I encountered Leon at the hunting grounds…”
Leon interjected from the side, “Thanks to Jessica’s timely rescue/otherwise I might not have survived.”
The crowd gasped in stunned disbelief.
They thought, ‘No way, even Leon actually needed Ms. Yates to save him! Just how extraordinary is this woman?‘
Jessica lowered her gaze, a flicker of something unreadable passing through her eyes, but now was not the time for explanations.
“So, Leon, you ran into the wolves too?” the Queen asked, her face full of surprise and concern. “Did you get hurt?”
Leon smiled reassuringly. “Just a minor injury, nothing serious. Thank you for your concern, Mother,” he said.
Andrew grew frantic, “If even Leon was wounded by the wolves, then… then Waldo…”
Nearly tearing the handkerchief in her hand, Adele cried out in panic, “Waldo’s in danger!”
Priscilla, frantic with worry, stormed over and grabbed Jessica by the collar. “Where is he now? What happened to him? I’m asking you, was it you…
“Release me,” Jessica leveled a cool gaze at her.
Priscilla was so furious she could have clawed Jessica’s face off. She grabbed Jessica by the collar and demanded, “I’m talking to youl What’s happened
