“They just got a call. One of the horses got spooked. Someone got thrown off.”

The staff didn’t wait for Sierra to ask more. They jumped into the car with the doctors and sped off,

Sierra’s face changed. She couldn’t sit still. Her first thought was that something had happened to Johnathan and the others.

Draven, of course, was a lot calmer. “Relax Even if someone fell, it won’t be any of them. It’s probably one of the guys Shane brought.”

“They all went out together?” Sierra asked quickly.

Yeah. They were racing. Even put money on it, I think. Didn’t I mention that?”

Draven looked like he was just now realizing he hadn’t told her that part. Sierra stared at him, utterly speechless,

Knowing Johnathan was with Shane made her even more on

edge.

Just then, the sound of hooves came pounding toward them. Sierra looked up–and immediately spotted the massive black stallion in the lead. The man on its back made her finally breathe easier.

Johnathan and the others rode in fast, though Maddox was nowhere in sight.

“Where’s the rest of you! What about Shane?” she asked.

“Shane broke his leg. He’s waiting for the medics to take him out,” Stone replied.

“His leg’s broken?” Sierra instinctively turned to Johnathan. She didn’t know why, but it felt like he had something to do with

“Not my problem. He couldn’t keep up and fell off on his own,” Johnathan said, completely unfazed

Mateo and Stone exchanged a look. They didn’t say anything, but their expressions said plenty.

Johnathan, innocent? Please.

He and Shane had been at each other’s throats since morning. When Shane suggested a race, Johnathan agreed on the spot.

And then he absolutely crushed him. Shane refused to admit defeat and pushed his horse too hard. The poor animal panicked, lost control, and threw him off.

So yeah–technically not Johnathan’s fault. All he did was provoke, insult, and humiliate the guy into making a dumb move.

Classic Johnathan,

He didn’t seem to care one bit. His eyes were fixed solely on Sierra,

She didn’t wear dresses often–the last time was her birthday party. But here she was in a long white one, and just looking at her made his throat tighten. He swallowed hard before finally saying, “You look good.”

So good, in fact, that he was getting ideas again.

Sierra didn’t need to guess. She could tell exactly what was going through his head just from the look in his eyes.

Whether he was or wasn’t, Sierra definitely was. Everything hurt.

“Damn shame. Broken leg. He’s gonna be stuck at home for a few months. Better take it easy, Shane.”

He started to say more–then noticed Sierra standing a short distance away.
