She clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white, jaw locked, teeth chattering uncontrollably.
Suddenly, she shoved Gilbert aside and stormed straight over to Karol.
“Why?” she demanded.
Sherilyn frowned, confusion etched across her face.
She needed to know. She had to understand why Karol was doing this.
“What did I ever do to you to make you hate me this much?”
Karol, sprawled on the floor and clutching her bleeding arm, glared up at Sherilyn with fury in her eyes.
“Haven’t you?” Karol spat back. “I’ve already explained everything to you—I confessed, I begged for mercy! But you still refused to let me go!”
Sherilyn shook her head, bewildered. “Explained what, exactly?”
“Oh, don’t play dumb with me!” Karol snapped, lifting her chin defiantly. “Are you really going to stand there and pretend you don’t know that nothing ever happened between me and Mr. Harrison?”
Sherilyn froze for a second. So that’s what this was about.
Karol saw the realization flicker across her face and sneered, “I knew it! You knew all along! You already knew the truth!”
“I did,” Sherilyn admitted quietly, making no attempt to deny it.
“Then why won’t you just let me go?” Karol’s voice broke as tears streamed down her face. “One word from you, and Mr. Harrison would give me another chance—why won’t you do it?”
“I’ve been blacklisted! I can’t get any work in this industry! Every producer, every investor just wants to lure me into bed… All because of you!”
“What?” Sherilyn stared at her, caught somewhere between disbelief and amusement.
She shook her head at Karol. “From the very beginning, you were the one who made up lies—insisted on turning nothing into something…”
Admittedly, she’d forgotten about it, and hadn’t bothered to explain things to Gilbert.
Looking Gilbert in the eye, she said honestly, “That night, at the hotel…the woman with you wasn’t Karol. It was me.”
The words hung in the air.
Gilbert’s mind reeled. The whole thing with Karol had been a thorn in his side, a guilt that had plagued him ever since—guilt he’d never been able to make up for.
And now, Sherilyn was telling him… that night, it had actually been her?
“Is this true?” Gilbert’s eyes lit up with hope and disbelief. For a moment, he looked as if he’d been granted a miracle.
“Yes,” Sherilyn replied, her brow furrowed.
“Sherilyn…” he breathed.
“Mr. Harrison!” Karol cut in sharply, stopping him just as he reached toward Sherilyn.
“You really didn’t know?” Karol’s eyes were red with rage as she swung back to Sherilyn, voice raw with accusation. “I knew it! It was you all along! You saw my letter—you knew everything! But you kept it from Mr. Harrison!”
