I finally breathed a sigh of relief with his agreement.

Then everything went black and I fainted.

When I arrived at the hospital, I was immediately taken into surgery.

The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.

Matthew was sitting beside me, his eyes filled with worry and anxiety.

The first thing I said after waking up was, "You didn't tell your parents, did you? I don't want them to worry. I can handle this myself, and besides, we're not together anymore..."

His eyes flickered briefly at my words.

Then, I suddenly heard the angry voice of his mother.

"How could you hide something as important as a divorce from us? Did we not treat you well? Even if you're divorced, you're still the mother of our grandson! Don't we have the right to care about you? Hiding the divorce is one thing, but almost losing your life and still not telling us?"

"That's the reason you rarely came home these past few years or called us much."

I looked up and saw my in-laws standing in front of me, their faces full of concern.

I froze at her words.

No calls?

But hadn't she been refusing me?

It suddenly came to my mind that when we divorced, I had returned the phone Matthew.

The number I used to call her today was a new one I got myself, so she probably thought it was a scam and blocked it.

Guilt flooded my heart.

I regretted letting my own selfishness cause them to worry about me all these years.

Matthew's phone rang at that moment.

His brow immediately furrowed after seeing who was calling.

I was closest to him and could clearly hear the police saying that Caroline had requested to see him.

He flatly refused.

"We will never settle! She must pay for what she did!"

"When my ex-wife leaves the hospital, we'll see her in court!"

He angrily hung up the phone.

His eyes landed on my injuries, and to my surprise, his eyes welled up with tears.

Before I could say anything, he had already left the room.

I thought maybe he still had some feelings for Caroline and had gone to clear things up with her.

While just an hour later, he returned, with our son.

As soon as our son entered the room, he ran over to my bed.

Matthew's mother turned pale with fright at his actions and hurriedly pulled him away.
