"Do you really want to know?" Pearl asked.

"Yes, I need to know how he's doing," Esther said firmly, biting her lip. She had to know, or she wouldn't be able to sleep.

Pearl couldn't help but make a sarcastic remark: "Doesn't he have a girlfriend? She's not doing anything, so why are you worrying?"

Esther was at a loss for words. After a while, she managed to say, "Okay, thanks, Pearl," and then she hung up.

Hearing the sadness in Esther's voice, Pearl felt an urge to help her. But she couldn't leave her house because everyone was supposed to stay inside.

Pearl got straight to the point. "How is James doing?"

"And who are you to him?" The woman on the line became protective as soon as James's name came up.

"I'm just someone who cares. How's he doing?"

"Why do you care if you're 'just someone'?" The woman's tone was mocking.

"Can you just tell me how he is? If not, let me speak to someone else," Pearl asked, her patience wearing thin.

"Why the attitude? He's my boyfriend. Shouldn't I be concerned if another woman is asking about him?"

But why would his illness be her fault?

Then she remembered pushing him into a fountain the last time they met, and it clicked. Could that have made him worse?

As Pearl pondered, Richard came over, looking concerned. He had overheard the conversation.

"You saw him?"

Pearl nodded.
