Anger was boiling in me but I did my best to stay calm. I refused to let her get the best of me or make me react in anger.
“Do you want to get dragged out of here?”
She looked confused. “Huh?”
“You heard me.” I cocked my head to the side. “If you want to experienced getting thrown out again, I’d be obliged to make that happen.”
If Cyrene was shocked, she got over it pretty quickly. The smirk came back to her face and she glared at me disdainfully.
“And how do you want to make that happen?” She peered behind me before smiling again.
“You came alone, didn’t you? I’d like to see you try.”
My eyes narrowed on her. She was right. I did come by myself, but that didn’t mean I was going to just let her get her way. Never.
“Am I good enough to protect you?”
Cyrene froze. I smiled when I recognized the familiarity in that voice. Standing behind Cyrene was none other than Askhan.
There were a couple of royal guards standing behind him, ready to execute whatever orders he gave. Askhan was glaring at Cyrene like she was nothing but a piece of gum beneath his shoes.
“Um…I—I…”
Cyrene stuttered like a bumbling fool, at a loss for words to say in the presence of Askhan. His glance landed on me for a brief moment. I could see in the anger burning in his eyes.
He turned back to Cyrene and motioned for his guards. “Get her out of my sights.”
“Hey. Let go of me!” Cyrene tried to protest but the guards didn’t give her any attention, instead dragging her away.
Askhan’s glare lingered on her for a while before he turned to me. He was no longer glaring and his eyes had visibly softened.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I replied. “I was just getting some books.”
He cocked his head. “For what?”
I proceeded to explain all about the student selection and how I needed to start reading so I could catch up to others who had already been preparing.
He nodded his head thoughtfully as I finished with the explanation. “You’re going to do great.”
I smiled. “Thank you.”
“Mind if I follow you?” he asked.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“I had my credit card ready.” He replied, the frown still evident on his face.
The realization dawned on me. He’d probably come here too with the intention of paying for the books. I shook my head with a smile.
“It’s fine. I’ve already done that.”
“I still wish you’d have allowed me to pay,” he sighed. “But I’m glad you have a vision of earning your own money. Makes me proud to know that.”
“Thank you.” I grinned.
“Of course,” he smiled as well but it dropped pretty quickly. “But if there’s ever an emergency, please let me know. My bank card is always available for you to use.”
My chest warmed with a feeling I didn’t quite understand. It was like he was healing a wound he didn’t even cause. My family loved me wholeheartedly and they were going out of their way to make it clear to me.
We eventually made our way back home. Just as I walked into the house, I was approached by an enraged Cyrene.
She must have come here when she was kicked out by Askhan. When she saw the bags, she was livid with anger.
“You crusty excuse of a princess,” she yelled. “How dare you buy all the books in the store when you know other people would need them for the self? I should have known.”
