The sound of applause coming from the crowd was like a record set on repeat. It seemed like it would never stop. I couldn’t help the feeling of warmth that bubbled deep down in my stomach.
They must have heard the statement I just made. The nobles that had once looked at me as nothing but a peasant were now looking with a bit of wonder and amazement in their eyes.
It didn’t matter if they’d thought of me as less than them before. I was sure they knew quite well what the implication of my statement meant.
Someone who could boldly declare such a thing was no pretender and neither was she an incompetent noble lady.
I was up for whatever challenge or competition lay ahead. It didn’t matter who I had to prove myself to. I would do it with pride and honour.
I turned back to the crowd, my eyes flickering to each of the faces staring expectantly at me. I couldn’t just stop now.
“To think that a day like this would actually come.” I let out a small laugh, unable to hold back the smile on my face.
I slowly began to move as I spoke. “I used to think that I was an orphan who didn't deserve to be trusted. And then I met my brothers, my childhood mates and people who have proven to me time and time again that we had an unbreakable bond. I found out that I was loved by many, and today I was affirmed by the Elders that I am capable.”
I took one glance at Cyrus, a smile falling on my face. “I believe that I will be able to do even more worthwhile things in the future!”
I did a small curtesy and made my way down the stairs as they all continued to applaud me. From the crowd, I could Alan, Askhan and Cyrus applauding me. They all had looks of pride in their eyes as they watched me.
I’d always waited for a moment like this. A moment where I would be applauded and held in such a high respect. It seemed it had come much sooner than I’d anticipated.
I made my way down the stage and headed for Alan, Askhan and Cyrus. On the way, I passed by Froste who’s eyes seemed to be glued to me.
There was a certain look in his eyes as he watched me. I didn’t need anyone to tell me before I noted the fondness in them. He was looking at me like I’d hung up the stars for him.
A part of me wanted to hold that face and forever cherish the softness in his eyes. That part was long gone.
I would not entertain any of such. I had important things to do than getting into some emotional rut that wouldn’t even benefit me at the end of the day.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw a bit of movement. I turned just in time to see Tina go up to Agnrs.
She leaned closer to her and began whispering something into her ear. Her face was twisted in contempt as she went on and on.
At some point, Agnrs gaze landed on me. Her eyes held an unreadable expression as she watched me. No doubt, Tina was probably slandering my name to her again.
I searched deep down in my chest for a feeling, a hint that maybe I cared even if it was just a little bit.
Nothing.
It didn’t matter what she said to Agnrs and it sure as hell didn’t matter if Agnrs believed. I didn’t care and I would never care.
