Listening to the murmurs around them, Diana leaned closer to Dylan and whispered, “I used to think your chances of getting back your wife were slim, but now…” 

She gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder “Good thing you don’t have feelings for Suzy; otherwise, you’d probably be coughing up blood out of regret by right now.” 

Desmond, standing nearby, noted Dylan’s seemingly impassive expression, though he knew better.

While everyone’s attention was focused on Suzy and Claude, few noticed Anne and Helena. By the time anyone thought to check on them, the mother–daughter pair had already escaped, having injured the two guards with a brick.

Helena, still feeling dazed, rubbed her forehead. “After the men went in, I started looking for you, but then everything went dark, and I passed out. When I came to, the scene was a disaster. Someone must have been secretly helping Suzy.” 

Helena massaged her face, feeling exasperated. “If your father finds out about this, he’ll never let us off the hook!”

Anne considered it and nodded. “You’re right. thought he’d stopped believing me, but even the Goodwins didn’t seem to faze him tonight.” 

A glint of satisfaction replaced the worry on her face. “Mom, you should have seen Suzy’s face–like she’d just swallowed something rotten. She thinks the Goodwins are her backup, but she’s underestimated the depth of Dylan’s feelings for me.” 

Anne’s face glowed with confidence. “I was so sure he didn’t love me anymore, but tonight made it clear I was wrong. His love for me hasn’t changed one bit.“‘
