"Why did you act that way towards them?"
"Huh?"
Damien arced his head to the side. Giya was seated next to him. He was driving the yacht, and she was occupying the seat next to his. A seat which he could had given to Jada like he did earlier.
Things had been quiet before now. They had been travelling for about twenty minutes and he was enjoying the solitude. Only for the girl to severe the silence which he held in great regards.
Though he knew that it was a matter of time before the girl asked him a question, he was expecting her to ask something different.
Something like, 'How did you bring the yacht out of the water? Are you a sort of magician or a sorcerer or necromancer?'
If she had asked any of those questions, he might not have been as surprised as he was at that moment.
There were quite a number of reasonable reasons for him to be surprised.
The maturity of the girl which seemed to be over hyped. How observant she was and logical she was to bring up that kinda conversation.
He was smitten by her over and over again. She seemed like a sister that he never had.
"Are you going to answer it?"
She probed. His eyes had been on her all along but his mind ploughing through thoughts.
"UHMMM..."
He realized that he had been treating her like a kid. And the more he did that, the disappointed he got.
PERHAPS I SHOULDN'T SEE HER AS A KID ANYMORE. PROBABLY THAT WAY, I MIGHT EVEN DISCOVER SOMETHING MORE ABOUT HER.
IT'S EVEN STRANGE THAT SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SURVIVED IN YACHT.
He shook his head.
NO, I'M THINKING TOO MUCH. LET'S LEAVE THINGS FOR WHAT THEY ARE.
"If you don't want to talk about it, it's fine. We could talk about it later."
She looked away from him. He couldn't take his eyes off her. He just couldn't. If he was driving through an express road, tarred in bitumen, he probably would had run into another vehicle, because it had been almost two minutes since he last looked at his front.
Like there was a necessity of it, he looked to the front. He needed to sort his thoughts for a short while. He didn't want to be too ahead, neither did he want to lag.
"I'm not sure."
He started, his palms pressed to the wheel, his hands putting a little pressure.
"Perhaps because I can't get over what they've done to me."
"Were they evil to you?"
She asked good and tough questions but her face was innocent.
"Evil would be a generous term. They were worst."
He took a deep breath.
"There was a time that I was very famished, I haven't eaten. For two days. Was saving up for my grandpa's surgery. So I could hardly take anything out of the salary I made."
He took a pause, the thought of it made him mad. He didn't want to feel sad or pity for himself anymore. Therefore, he had learnt to switch sadness to anger. He didn't want to see himself as the pathetic loser anymore. After all, he was way past that time of his life. He's almost like a light year ahead of difficult times.
"I'm sure they saw that I had no strength. I even told them that I didn't eat yet. Yet, I was made to go on my four, while two of them put their legs on my back. The last of them was purposely eating at my front."
He chuckled softly.
"Most time when I think of it, I had no idea why they were so cruel to me. Perhaps it made them happy to power trip. I was so mad but couldn't do anything."
He nodded his head for no reason, smacking his lips to hold back the betraying emotion that was about to make him moody.
"You see, there was a time when I got so mad that I wanted to beat the hell out of them. The worst which would happen was getting beaten up by that crazy Alex, then laid off. But I couldn't... because no job would pay that high... and I wouldn't be able to save for my grandpa's surgery. You could imagine how helpless Damien was... he could neither leave, nor fight."
He scoffed.
"You see, I was warned not to take the job by some mates. But I was desperate. And nobody wanted to have anything to do with the carrier of bad luck."
