Chapter 8
His Beta’s words hung unfinished, but Ethan already sensed the truth. Yet he refused to face the bloody reality before him, choosing dental instead.
“Impossible. Sarah couldn’t have discovered anything. She would have confronted me immediately—that’s her way. But she said nothing. Sent no messages these past two nights.”
“I explained everything about the feast. She accepted it!”
“She wouldn’t just vanish like this. I won’t allow it!”
“FIND HER! Search every territory, every den, every shadow!”
His voice cracked with Alpha command: “Bring her back alive, or… or bring me her body to bury with my own hands!”
The last words exploded from him with such force his Beta stumbled back, pale and shaking, before
rushing to track my scent.
As he left, Alexandra glided over, wearing her familiar mask of gentle concern. She slipped her arm through Ethan’s.
“What’s wrong? Sarah’s upset about me taking her place, isn’t she? But on such an important day for
the Sterling Pack, with all the Alpha Council present… to pull such a stunt? Faking a plane crash?
She’s being childish.”
“Ethan, you’ve always indulged her too much. I know Sarah–she has no other pack ties. She’ll return
when she cools down. The Elders are waiting for the ceremonial toast.”
Once, Ethan might have believed her sweet poison. Might have waited for me to come crawling back.
But remembering my strange behavior, something primal and panicked clawed at his chest.
Finally, he jerked away from her touch, his voice winter–cold.
“Alexandra, this is your last warning. You’re only here as Sarah’s stand–in. She is my mate in the
pack’s eyes. The Pack Elders are not yours to claim.”
Bitterness flashed in Alexandra’s eyes, but before she could speak, Rose bounded up, tugging at
Ethan’s ceremonial robes.
