The news of the crashed flight glowed on his phone screen as Ethan’s veins darkened with rage 

beneath his skin. 

As he moved through the ceremonial hall, whispers from the pack representatives cut like silver 

blades: 

“I heard Alexandra’s just standing in. Surely the Alpha hasn’t actually honded with that crippled 

wolf?” 

“Impossible. The Moon Sage Pack moved overseas years ago. Sarah has no pack ties here. Not a single pack member came for her binding ceremony. The Alpha must still yearn for Alexandra–look how elaborate this ceremony is. This was planned all along.” 

“Poor thing. First the rogue attack cripples her wolf, then she loses her ability to bear pups. The Moon Sage’s only heir, reduced to this…” 

Each whisper darkened Ethan’s expression further. How had this happened? He’d silenced everyone about Sarah’s attack. The rogues were bound to silence. 

Once the ceremony ended, Sarah would be his mate in name. They would build a life together, 

watch Rose grow. He would protect her, ensure no one looked down on her weakened state. 

But why was the truth spreading? What had happened in the days he’d abandoned her? Had these 

whispers reached her ears? Had anyone dared challenge her? 

The questions crushed his chest like a silver chain. 

The Pack Elders‘ relief at his return quickly turned poisonous. 

“Son, now that Sarah’s gone, let Alexandra take her rightful place.” 

“That broken wolf was bad luck anyway.” 

“Choose a date for the official pack binding. The Sterling Pack hasn’t celebrated like this in ages. After the ceremony, we’ll have her scent cleared from your den–make it ready for your true mate!” 

Ethan froze, staring at his parents‘ joyful faces. For the first time, his wolf recoiled from them. 

“What binding? Isn’t Alexandra mated to another pack overseas?”
