ATHENA

One week later….

I'm going through the hardest time of my life. Nothing I do seems to close the hole in my chest.

Giana and Ariana have been reaching out, but I haven't had the strength to face them. Not since that day when the guards threw me out at the orders of Alexander.

I didn't call for them because I was ashamed and that was what Alex wanted. To humiliate me.

The cruel bastard wouldn't even let me send my son off.

I have no memory of what he looks like and now I don't know where he was buried.

I've cried an ocean but none of it seems to be working well for me.

I had received an offer to do internship In the outskirts of the city where there has been an outbreak of a virus.

So here I am. Waiting for my flight when I hear angry steps walking towards me.

I look up to find a face I've never seen before. She looks ready to bite my face off and before I can say anything, she tries to land a slap on my face but I block her.

Not today.

“You bitch! How dare you ruin my son's career? You're bad luck and should be exorcised!”

I don't even know who she is!

Can't I get a damn break?

I'm at the airport for crying out loud!

I tighten my grip on the stranger’s wrist, my heart pounding in my chest. Her fury is blistering, her dark eyes burning with unrestrained hatred.

“Who the hell are you?” I demand, my voice hard despite my exhaustion.

She yanks her arm free, chest heaving.

“You dare ask me that?” She spits out. “I’m Zayan’s mother, you worthless-”

My stomach drops. Zayan’s mother?

“I should have known a woman like you would bring nothing but misfortune!” she hisses, drawing the attention of nearby travelers. “You ruined my son’s career! He was fired from the hospital because of you! And now, now my husband is under investigation! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”

I blink, my breath catching. Zayan… was fired?

I had no idea.

My lips part, but no words come out.

“You act so innocent, but you’re nothing but a curse!” she continues, her voice venomous. “My son was a respected doctor! One of the best! He worked his entire life for that position, and now? Now he’s jobless because you couldn’t keep your mess to yourself!”

My fingers tremble as I clench them into fists.

Alex.

It has to be him.

That devil!

A fresh wave of anger crashes over me, but I don’t let it show.

Instead, I lift my chin. “I'm so sorry, I didn’t know-,”

She lets out a bitter laugh, cutting me off,

“Oh save your stupid apology and fix the mess instead of running like a little vixen you are!”

I press my lips together, unwilling to let her see how deeply her words cut.

I am running.

Because staying in this city means suffocating under the weight of everything Alex took from me.

But now… Zayan is paying for something he didn’t do.

A voice crackles over the airport intercom, announcing my boarding gate.

“We are not here to cause you harm. We heard what happened with Zayan and thought maybe we could lend a hand. If you don't mind that is.”

I stare at them, my mind racing as I try to make sense of what’s happening. Ethan Sinclair. The name alone sends a chill down my spine.

The Sinclairs are one of the most powerful families in the neighboring country, Bayern. Ive heard they're ruthless, wealthy, untouchable. And yet, here they are, standing in front of me, offering to help.

When I first heard of Zayan’s surname, I thought it was only a coincidence.

My eyes flick to Zayan’s mother, Majorie. She looks livid but doesn’t say another word, as if Ethan’s presence alone is enough to keep her in check.

I turn back to Rose, still wary. “Why?” My voice is hoarse from all the crying I’ve done over the past week. “Why would you want to help me?”

Rose gives me a knowing look, her expression filled with understanding.

“Because I know what it’s like to have everything taken from you.” Her grip on my hand tightens for a second before she lets go. “And because Zayan doesn’t deserve to suffer for something he didn’t do.”

“Alexander is not easily convinced and I'm afraid he might just misunderstand me.”

Rose smiles, “I'm sure he already knows this conversation is going on as we speak. Don't worry, we will just need him to reinstate Zayan, and give you a choice to do what you want. He owes you that much.”

“This is why I never wanted you to know about my son! You are just as insane as that father of yours! Thinking power solves everything. That Alex boy has a powerful backing this can cause a war all for what? My husband's elections are in a week's time! I don't have time for risks!”

“Then why don't you go home and let the adults handle the mess while you focus on the campaign posters?” Rose shoots her a look and my mouth twitches holding back a laugh.

Marjory's face is beat red as she glares at Rose, “Why you-”

“Choose your next words wisely.” Ethan warns, his hands in his pockets while he stands protectively over his wife.

I'm confused, speechless but a little bubble of hope begins,

“So, what do you say?” Rose stretches her hand towards me.

I nod with a small smile and shake her hand.

I don't know what I'm getting myself into but I have nothing left to lose.

But I won't let an innocent take the fall for me.
