ATHENA
“You're only sitting before me because of the respect I have for you.” Alex says rudely to Ethan, who seems unbothered by his remark.
“Perks of being rich, I believe. So I trust you know why I'm here?” He responds.
Alex leans back in his chair, his eyes focused on me and dancing with so much hate it makes me shift uncomfortably,
“No I don't. Please enlighten me.”
I keep my face impassive, but the weight of Alex’s gaze burns through me.
He knows exactly why Ethan Sinclair is sitting across from him, yet he’s playing coy, making me feel small, insignificant-like I’m not even worth acknowledging.
Rose is sitting by my side, and her lips are pressed into a thin line, showing she has so much to say but will let her husband handle it.
Ethan, however, is unfazed. He leans back casually in his chair, fingers tapping against the polished wood of Alex’s desk. The room is silent except for the faint ticking of a clock mounted on the wall behind us.
“You’re going to reinstate Zayan,” Ethan finally says, his tone bored yet firm. “And you’re going to make sure Athena isn’t blacklisted from every hospital in this damn city.”
Alex lets out a scoff, shaking his head as if he’s amused. “And what makes you think I’d do that?” His lips curl into a sneer. “Because you asked nicely?”
Ethan eyes him, his eyes debating an answer. He has something he wants. By the look on Alex's face, he now understands.
But what could he possibly want so bad?
Ethan looks up, and a man walks over to him and passes him an envelope.
“I always wondered why you're always hung up on your ex when you had zero chemistry, so I did my homework.” He passes it over to Alex, who has a locked jaw as he grabs the envelope.
I frown my brows, not understanding a word he just said.
“You seem a little too interested in me. Is your wife not enough?” Alex bites. A sick smile on his lips as he scans whatever is in his hands.
Ethan laughs.
“I'm sure you'll. Do the wise thing, or I'll be forced to act.” Ethan stands and buttons his jacket before stretching his hand to help Rose up.
They walk towards the door and pause,
“And one more thing, Athena will have to make whatever request she wants and she will get it.”
If looks could kill, we would all be six feet under.
Whatever Ethan threatened him with must have been big for him to give in. Ethan is powerful but so is Alex, and no one would force his hand.
Which makes me wonder what they have on him.
Hang up on your ex
The words echo in my head as my heart clenches in pain.
Did he fold just to protect Leah?
“I'll call you hun.” Rose places a kiss on my cheek and gives me a hug before her husband walks her out.
For a long moment, he just stares at me, the air thick with unspoken fury. Then, finally, he exhales slowly and straightens, smoothing down the front of his suit as if collecting himself.
"Fine," he says, his voice eerily calm. "Consider it done. You can work with your lover, and I'll make sure you get what you want. Now, get the hell out of my office."
He doesn’t wait for a response. He picks up the envelope again, his attention already back on whatever damning secret Ethan has handed him.
I stand, my body still thrumming with adrenaline, but I pause, “and the grave?”
Alex chuckles, “Get the fuck out Athena. Or I just might change my mind and do worse to that fucker.”
So is that it? He will never tell me where my son's grave is?
My blood begins to boil and I feel it rushing to my ears from how angry I am.
Before I can speak, The door opens and the last person I expected to see walks in.
Leah Woods.
And in her hands is a baby that has the same eye color as Alex.
I don't know how to explain it, but just by Leah's look on the face confirms what is in my head. Is that why she was so smugg without a Care in the world when I last saw her?
Is that why she left?
To give birth to his child in secret?
I feel my knees weaken, I almost collapse before rushing out of the damned room.
