I'm running as fast as I can. My heart is beating like crazy.

"Nate, slow down." My best friend Marcus calls out. He's trying to keep up with me but he can't

My lungs are screaming for air but I don't care.

I don't care about anything right now,

Except Verena.

I rush through the hospital doors and run over to where I see Aiden and Skylar standing.

"How is she?" I demand. My voice is choked my whole body is heaving.

"I don't know Nate. We called you as soon as we heard." Skylar whispers.

I can't think.

I can't breathe.

I need to see her.

A doctor is walking towards us. I nearly attack him.

"How is she? How is my wife?" I hiss.

The doctor doesn't seem fazed by my hysteric state.

"Are you Mr. Cohen?" He asks.

I simply nod.

I haven't experienced fear like this before.

"Your wife is stable. You can go see her." He smiles.

I let out a rush of air through my nose. My shoulders slump in relief.

I'm led to her room. My hands shake as I clutch the door knob. I take a deep breath before stepping inside.

She smiles as soon as she sees me.

For a moment I'm awestruck by how beautiful she is.

She's clearly exhausted but she sits up to greet me.

And that's when I see it.

The small bundle of blankets nestled in her arms, a tiny hand reaches out from under it.

My legs nearly give out.

"Come here Nate." My wife's soft voice beckons and my legs automatically start moving towards her. I sit down at the edge of the bed.

My whole body is trembling. I can feel the blood pounding in my ears.

"You're a father Nate. Look at her, she's so beautiful." Verena is crying now.

But right now I can't think about that.

All I can think about is the tiny creature in her arms.

The truth suddenly settles in. I feel as if the air is knocked out of my lungs.

I'm a father.
