Mariela left the hospital and headed directly to the law firm to begin working, meticulously organizing Andrew’s case files, She planned to take him to the Social Security Administration on Monday to officially certify his work–related injury. 

Busy all afternoon, she forgot her promise to meet Lennon in the evening. 

When Lennon called, Mariela was still reviewing the case files. 

“Marie, where are you? I’ll pick you up.” 

“Huh?” Mariela snapped out of her daze.“Oh, I forgot to tell you, I’m working late at the law firm.” 

“Overtime?” Lennon sounded confused.“Didn’t you go shopping with Caylee and Fiona?” 

Mariela, with the phone cradled between her shoulder and ear, typed briskly on the keyboard as she spoke, “No, I received an urgent case and had to work on it immediately.” 

“Have you eaten?” Lennon asked. 

“Not yet.” 

“I’ll pick you up for dinner. You should take care of work tomorrow. It’s getting late now.” 

Mariela checked the time on her computer.“Okay, I’m at a law firm. Just come over.” 

Lennon said, “Alright, wait for me. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.” 

“Okay.” 

After hanging up, Mariela leaned back in her chair, staring at the case files on her computer. 

Andrew’s case was simple with a high chance of winning. 

But it was probable that the factory wouldn’t be willing 

It was a labor dispute and needed labor arbitration first. 

If the company rejected arbitration, they could sue. 

to pay any compensation. 

The lawsuit process was long and tedious. Though they might win, Andrew couldn’t wait. 

He needed money for treatment, as did Jessie. 

She paid for today’s treatment, but it wasn’t enough. 

Andrew and Jessie struggled even with basic living expenses. 

She rubbed her temples and called the charity foundation director. 

She had donated 1.6 million dollars to the charity foundation, so she expected the director to provide some assistance to Andrew and Jessie. Then she transferred money to Gia, instructing her to hire a cook to prepare meals for Andrew and Jessie. 

Gia called back, utter disbelief in her voice. 

“32 thousand dollars! That’s 32 thousand dollars, Ms. Logan!” Gia exclaimed.“Hiring a cook doesn’t cost that much!” 

Mariela replied calmly, “The money’s for their food and the cook’s pay. I also handled their medical bills. Just use what’s left for their clothes, shoes, and other daily stuff. I appreciate your help with this, Gia.”
