Bryce stole a glance at her, his breath catching slightly. 

They walked side by side, Mariela looking straight ahead, oblivious to the affection in Bryce’s

“Mr. Vance, what did you want to talk about?” Mariela asked, her tone casual. 

“It’s about the thing my aunt trying to set us up,” Bryce began. 

Mariela paused for a moment. 

“Honestly, I don’t feel that way either. My aunt was just meddling, and I didn’t want to make things awkward between us,” Bryce said apologetically.“I see you as a business partner and a friend. I don’t want this to come between us, so I thought it was best to clear the air.” 

Mariela let out a subtle sigh of relief.“I’m glad you feel the same way. I was worried…” 

“About what?” 

“Nothing,” Mariela said, her tone lighter now.“I’m glad you think the same way, just a business partner and friend.” 

Bryce’s voice softened.“If my aunt tries to set us up again, you can just say no.” 

“Okay.” 

“Ms. Logan, do you have a sister around Annika’s age?” Bryce asked. 

Mariela asked, “How old is Annika?” 

“She’ll be seven in a little over a month.” 

“That’s about a year younger than my sister,” Mariela said. 

“That’s around the same age,” Bryce said.“Maybe they could meet? Kids need friends their own age. No matter how well we get along with them, we can’t replace our peers.” 

Mariela agreed with this statement. 

Angelica was still in therapy. Maybe having a new friend would help her recover. 

“I’ll ask her,” Mariela said.“My sister’s been through a lot lately, so I need to maksre she’s oper to making new friends before I give you an answer.”
