Or it wasn't a break-up, but an act of stepping out of an unwanted situation, ditching me? What if he considered it a fling and grew tired of me as Leo said?
A series of queries took the shape of a powerful whirlwind and hit my world, turning it upside down. I was unable to believe any of the possibilities mentioned above due to facts and figures.
We were deeply in love, sharing our passion through physical intimacy. Bright didn't look disappointed after our date night. Then why? Why would a caring and a loving man leave me on a whim? Was I missing anything?
Grabbing my head with both hands, I groaned in frustration.
"What to do now?"
Fortunately, my brain picked up its services really quick and started working for a clue. I dialed Bright's number for the one last time. He wasn't returning my calls, so it was a stupidity to expect any answer now. But there was no harm in trying once more.
However, the recorded message poured a bucket of cold water over me,
"The number you have dialed is powered off!"
Blimey!
A defeated sigh spilled from my lips, and I tried his office's number, at least, one of his employees would attend it. The bell rang twice, and then the call was connected, showing me a hope to hold on to. I spoke desperately.
"Hi, it's Laura speaking. Can I talk to Mr. Bright?"
The man on the other side remained silent for a while, then he replied hesitantly.
"No, Miss Laura. The boss isn't in the office. He won't come here now."
As only Bright's assistant could be aware of his schedule, I questioned him further.
"Can you please tell me where he is? I need to talk to him. It's an emergency!"
My pitiful pleading melted that assistant's heart, he gave me the contact information of Bright's friends.
"I apologize for the inconvenience, but I really don't know anything about my boss's personal life.
You can ask his close friends. Perhaps, they will help you."
Bright's ice hockey friends and wide business circle were already in my knowledge, he had introduced me to his close buddies as well. However, it never crossed my mind to collect their phone numbers.
So, I thanked his secretary for this favor and called Mr. Howard, Bright's quarterback and his best friend since college.
"Mr. Howard, can you please tell me what's going on?"
"Bright didn't come for practice!"
And so on …
Everyone had different excuses to avoid my queries, suggesting that I should ask Bright in person. These vague responses exhausted my patience soon.
One fine evening, I even picked up my bag and visited Bright's house and office, intending to catch him like a detective. It would be great if he could just say it to my face instead of avoiding me.
However, all my efforts were fruitless as Bright wasn't found at his usual places. The owner of ‘The Blue Moon Hotel' swore on his life to dispel my doubts.
A whole week passed, and I didn't hear from Bright, this catastrophe pushed me to the verge of insanity. I was about to go bonkers when Echo informed me.
"Check the news, Miss Laura. It's about Mr. Bright!"
My hands were shaking like dried leaves as I clicked the link she sent to me, dreading bad news. However, I was struck by lightning in a broad daylight to read the headline,
"The renowned ice hockey player, Mr. Bright, is officially engaged to the heiress of Lockwood industries …"
Author's Note: Is Bright really getting married? The answer will be revealed in the next chapter.
