“Yes, a restraining order is fine. Without it, no one can stop Mr. Leo from visiting you.”
Officer Nolan expressed his concerns regarding my situation and sent the journalists away. The extra security was also called for another emergency in the city.
Bright and I walked towards the main entrance of the building with officer Nolan, he spoke sincerely
“Miss Laura, your issues with Mr. Leo are your personal matters, taking them to the court or public will only jeopardize your peace.
Please try to resolve them through dialogues, it will save you from unnecessary trouble.”
As a person who had dealt with such cases on a daily basis, he guided me for my convenience. So, I thanked him.
“I can’t thank you enough for your services tonight, officer. I will surely consider your advice.”
We then waited for the last police car to leave and sighed, a moment without the heat of curious gazes helped us to relax.
Rubbing my eyes, I yawned lazily.
“It was a nerve-wracking roller coaster, Bright. I am so tired.”
He fixed his hair and coat, complaining about Leo’s behavior.
“I was used to thinking that Leo was a reasonable man, but tonight he proved me wrong.
For a moment, it looked like he had lost his mind.”
We both commented on bizarre occurrences in the office and strolled out of the doors, the mere thought of crashing on bed was like heaven for me.
“Just one quick glance at my sleeping little girl, and then I will call it night.”
Thinking about Jane, I experienced a massive j ump scare when the sound of tires screeching echoed in the silence of night, followed by the smell of burning rubber.
I raised my head and saw two white minivans parked ten feet away from our car.
“Who are they?”
I couldn’t get a moment to voice my thoughts in my head as two groups of armed goons, all dressed in black, ran out of the vans. Their modern weapons caused a jolt of terror in my body.
“Run!”
Bright’s alarming shout was the last thing I could hear as the ear-splitting sounds of gunshots shook the whole building. We didn’t even get a chance to run.
As an instinct, we crouched down, using our car as a shield, but this temporary setting wasn’t practical.
“What to do now?”
We both looked at each other in panic, Bright took out his cell phone.
“I will call 911!”
Moreover, there was no time for it as those relentless attackers were approaching closer, firing nonstop. Fear became a tangible, living force as my frozen brain registered only one thing: Death!
This unforeseen attack was nothing but a siren of death for me. With no help or protection, I was going to die soon. Any stray bullet could end my life.
My innocent daughter’s face flashed across my eyes as I accepted my fate. But how would she live without me and Bright?
After years of waiting, she had finally tasted the luxury of a complete family, yearning for more comfort. Her wish list for tomorrow pierced fiery needles in my heart, there wasn’t a possibility that I would see the next sunrise while being stuck in this hopeless situation.
Meanwhile, Leo’s adrenaline rush was over after getting shot, the tornado of pain hit him with full force as he lost his footing. He was about to collapse, but I caught him on time, pulling him behind the table.
The fountain of blood erupting from his chest made me lose my wits, I took off my scarf to press on the wound.
“Gosh, you are bleeding too much. How far is the help?”
As Bright was already contacting authorities before, I asked him desperately. However, Leo’s statement fucked my brain when he stopped me.
“Don’t touch me, Laura. I don’t want to soil your hands with my blood.”
Whoa!!!
The nerve of that man!
A mix of frustration and helplessness ran me out of patience, I snapped at him.
“Not a single word, Leo!
Be cooperative and keep your eyes open. I am with you!”
I folded my scarf in a split second and placed it over the chest for soaking blood, but it was useless. With every passing, Leo was losing blood, my eyes burned with tears as I replaced my scarf with a coat.
And like his stubborn, idiotic self, Leo struggled to speak again, uttering incoherent sentences.
“No … need … to do …
I am … dying …. Anyway…”
