After a while, lunch was served. At the dining table, Lily ate quietly, sensing Xavier’s occasional gaze on her. She wasn’t sure what Edith had said to him, but his stare made her feel strangely guilty. 

When Lily finally finished her meal, she helped Edith back to her room for her afternoon nap and then went upstairs to her bedroom. 

She thought Xavier had gone to the company, but to her surprise, he was already in her room. The midday sun shone brightly, casting a soft glow on his shirt, making him look warm and lazy. 

Lily paused with her hand on the door handle, her clear eyes reflecting his image. 

“Come in.” Xavier’s voice was rich with magnetism, and his throat sounded as though it were filled with soft gravel–gravelly yet smooth. 

She closed the door and stepped inside. She nervously clutched the hem of her clothes, wondering if Edith had said something that might lead him to misunderstand her. 

Although Xavier already had many misconceptions about her, she didn’t want to add to them. 

She stopped in front of him. His fingers lifted her chin, and he studied her face–small, innocent, obedient, yet full of rebellion. He leaned down, his lips brushing her check as he spoke slowly. 

“Don’t even think about pulling any tricks under my nose. Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. Understand?” 

Lily met his cold gaze, her own flickering with confusion. She couldn’t understand what had triggered his mood or why he was giving her space now. she didn’t mind. 

“Okay.” 

“Now, change into something else, and let’s go buy a car.” With that, Xavier released her and began adjusting his shirt and cufflinks. 

Lily blinked, surprised. “You’re really going?” 

She had assumed he was just saying it. She had already looked at several cars online and planned to ask him in the next few days which one he liked. “If I promised you something, I’ll keep my word,” Xavier replied, his gaze locking 

hers.. 

His deep, unwavering look made Lily’s heart tremble. For a moment, she was lost in his gaze, forcing her racing heartbeat back under control. 

“No need to change. Let’s just go like this,” she said, still slightly dazed.
