Chapter 129
As evening fell, Lily returned home and adjusted the design plans for the Glenview Villa on her computer. Once everything was in order, she quickly emailed them to Sarali.
The sky darkened, and the lights outside began to flicker on, casting a soft glow in the dim room. She stood up, stretching lazily, then decided to go downstairs and help Emma with dinner.
It had already been nearly half a month since she started working. The days of wearing an apron and spending time in the kitchen felt like they belonged to another lifetime.
She couldn’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. The pressure from work seemed to ease
ase with these simple tasks.
“Mrs. Fulton, it’s clear that Mr. Fulton really enjoys your cooling.” Emma observed. “Why don’t you write down a recipe next time? When I have a free moment, I can practice so I don’t keep making dishes that don’t suit his taste. He works so hard, and his health needs attention.”
The fish she had ruined and meant to discard, yet Xavier had devoured nearly half of it once Lily stepped in. Meanwhile, every meal Emma carefully prepared was usually left half–eaten.
“Next time, when we have a weekend free, we’ll cook together,” Lily said, chopping a piece of tenderloin. “He is a bit picky. I’ll write down everything he doesn’t eat ”
It was no use relying on verbal instructions alone.
The list of things Xavier couldn’t eat was long. For example, he could eat cilantro and ginger, but not both in the same dish. He didn’t like stir–fried cucumbers, only cold, pickled cucumbers,
“Mrs. Fulton, you really pay attention to Mr. Fulton’s preferences, Emma commented. “I’m getting old and can’t remember everything. If you write it down next time, I’ll just stick it on the refrigerator… then I can check it every day when I cook!”
Pay attention? Lily had carefully learned Xavier’s habits over the past two years. Xavier himself hadn’t even noticed some of the small details.
During their first year of marriage, she’d made him a different dish every day for a month. She kept a notebook, noting which dishes he liked and which ones he didn’t touch at all. Over time, patterns began to emerge
Lily glanced up, her eyes softening with warrnth before quickly regaining her composure. She turned on the stove to cook
Xavier came home at 7:00 pm. His brows were furrowed from exhaustion. After hanging up his bag and jacket, he walked toward the living room.
As he passed the dining room, he paused when he saw the familiar figure in the kitchen.
Lily, who was wearing an apron and a low ponytail, was dressed in light gray cotton loungewear, making her skin look pale and glowing.
The soft light
from the kitchen illuminated her, and the surrounding steam and smoke swelled around her.
“Mr. Fulton, you’re back?” Emma called out, bringing a dish to the table. She smiled at him. “Mrs. Fulton is truly virtuous. You’re in for a treat tonight!” Xavier’s features softened, a rare expression of satisfaction crossing his face. “Indeed.”
naware of how lucky she was
He had always thought of Lily as a competent wife who took good care of him. Yet, Lily herself seemed unaware But tonight, she’d taken the initiative to cook for him, and it was clear she had realized her recent mistakes. “Mrs. Fulton is lucky too. You two are such a perfect match!” Emma praised before returning to the kitchen to help. Watching Lily work, Xavier felt as if something inside him was slowly being filled.
He tugged at his tie as he went upstairs. After a shower, he changed into fresh clothes and came back downstairs.
The dishes and soup were already on the table, and he arrived just as Lily served the last bowl of soup.
