Chapter 138 

Lily’s phone rang from the comer of the table. It was a call from the hospital. 

“Hello, Ms. Joyner. Mr. Dawson asked me to inform you that you may visit the patient this afternoon.” 

“Alright. Thank you!” Lily’s face lit up with joy. After hanging up, she requested a day off from Nadia and headed straight to the hospital. 

She first met Xander at 2:00 p.m., the beginning of visiting hours. “Mr. Dawson, has my brother’s condition improved?” 

Xander adjusted his glasses. “Strictly speaking, there’s no significant improvement in his condition based on our observations. 

“Though he’s become slightly more emotionally stable than when he arrived, lids overall state is still bad. He said he wanted to see you during my rounds this morning” 

Lily’s heart tightened. “He specifically asked to see me?” 

“Yes. I had asked if he wanted to see his parents, but he refused. He only wanted to see you.” Xander paused momentarily before adding, “Kindly pay attention to his behavior when you see him. Also, try not to mention the car accident and watch closely for any unusual behavior.” 

Bobby and Hazel simply didn’t like Lily. Yet, they showered Hayden with an overwhelming love more than normal parents. 

Hayden would occasionally argue with them. It was often about their unfair treatment of Lily. However, the person he wanted to see now was her. A complex feeling stirred within Lily. She even felt a hint of nervousness. “Alright. I’ll monitor him closely.” 

Xander instructed a resident doctor to take her to Hayden’s ward Lily hadn’t seen him once since he had been admitted to the hospital ten days ago. The curtains in the ward were drawn, blocking out most of the sunlight. The room was dim. The young man on the hospital bed looked pale and sickly. His hair, which was recently shaved, had grown back unevenly, giving him a slightly unkempt appearance. The caregivers had done their job well. His face was clean–shaven. 

Hayden looked up at the sound of the door. His dark eyes were fixed intently on Lily.

step she took. The unfamiliar young man before her was nothing like the cheerful brather she once knew. 

It had only been a month since the incident. She couldn’t imagine the torment he had endured. 

“Lily” Hayden called out to her first. His voice was calm and devoid of any emotion. 

Lily responded, “Hey. I’m here” 

She set down her bag and sat down on a chair next to the hospital bed before clasping his hand in hers and looking at him intently. “Did you miss me?” His eyes were faintly shadowed with dark circles. They were likely from sleepless nights. The word “haggard” barely began to describe his state at this moment. 

It was as if all the energy had d been drained from him. When he wasn’t speaking, his gaze was vacant and his face was stiffened. It was almost as if he were devoid of life. 

He nodded slightly. “I did. There are so many things that I want to tell you 

“Go ahead.” Lily nodded in n reassurance as she leaned in and held his hand tightly. “I’m listening.” 

“Have Dad and Mom been treating you poorly again?” Hayden leaned toward her as well. 

They spoke softly in the quiet ward, their voices barely above a whisper.
