Chapter 140
It was Timothy. He was staring at Lily. Navier stood in the corner with one hand in his pocket and half of his body hidden in the dim light. His deep eyes tuned toward her and met her tear–streaked gaze
Her forehead was red and swollen, and her face was marked with heavy traces of tears. She looked utterly disheveled and miserable.
He frowned instinctively
Liby looked up at him. All her fear and grievance surged up the moment their eyes met. It was as if she had found a glimmer of solace, a desperate hope for him to calm the storm of emotions she couldn’t control. She longed for him to hold her and tell her Hayden would be fine.
“Xavier
However, another voice sounded and shattered all her fragile hopes. It was Sarah.
She emerged from the elevator, glancing briefly at Lily before walking over to Xavier and gently looping through his arm.
She leaned close to his ear and whispered, “Mr. McKay is upstairs. His condition is still unstable. We should go check on him quickly.”
“You guys go ahead first.” Xavier felt like a blade had been carved into his heart as he saw the look in Lily’s eyes.
He intended to push Sarah’s hands away before Sarah quickly said, “I saw the reporters when I came in. They’re here. They must’ve followed you here…”
He paused briefly, seemingly regaining his senses. Then, he turned slightly to the side and gave his order to Timothy.
“You go check on Mrs. Fulton and report to me immediately if anything happens.” With that, he turned and headed upstairs with Sarah.
The glimmer of hope in Lily’s eyes was slowly fading. She watched as Xavier left with Sarah
A harsh clarity settled over her in that moment. He would comfort Sarah with warmth and care when she cried and offer her tissues to wipe her tears. However, he wasn’t the man who could bring her solace when she was feeling upset.
The unbidden expectation and instinctive longing she felt for him was a cruel trick played by her own emotion.
It only ended up hurting her the most whenever she regained her senses, leaving her angry and sorrowful
“Mrs. Fulton.” A pair of male leather shoes appeared before her, and Timothy’s voice came from above.
She didn’t lift her head and fixed her gaze on the floor instead
Timothy saw her state and hesitated to speak. The door to the ward opened before he could say a word.
The resident doctor walked out. “Ms. Joyner, Dr. Dawson has given your brother an appropriate amount of sedative. He’s fallen asleep now. Would you…. like to see him?”
“Yes.” Lily steadied herself against the wall and nodded to Timothy before walking into the ward without hesitation.
Xavier’s concern no longer mattered to her at this point. Besides, he had merely sent Timothy to check on her.
