Xavier was trying to cheer her up? The idea felt so unfamiliar and implausible that it sounded fake to Lily. 

She rejected it outright. “Please pass on my thanks, but dinner won’t be necessary. I don’t need him to cheer me up.” 

Her willingness to coexist peacefully with Xavier in that house was the extent of her effort. 

Besides, she had no interest in pretending everything was fine as it all their impleasant moments bad never happened. 

“What is it?” Terence noticed she was staring at her phone and lost in thought, so he leaned toward her

“It’s nothing. Let’s keep going.” Lily put her phone away. “This place is huge. Let’s finish up. Lunch is on me.” 

Terence smiled as he led her to the left wing of the hall. “Don’t worry, I won’t fight you for the bill today. I’ll let you treat me for once. 

Lily couldn’t help but smile, “I’ll stop accepting any kindness from you and Maryanne in the future if you try to pay again today.” 

They laughed and chattered before they moved on to another exhibition room. 

Meanwhile, Timothy’s forehead was damp with cold sweat in Nova Group as he hesitated to relay Lily’s response. 

He placed the phone in front of Xavier and let him read the message himself. Who would dare to reject Xavier? Moreover, Lily’s words were sharp as it accusing him of false sincerity. 

A berry silence settled over the spacious office when he read the exchange. It was early winter, the heater hadn’t been turned on yet. The office was already deserted, and the temperature seemed to drop even further.

“Mrs. Fulton might just be in a bad mood. That’s why she chose her words poorly!” Timothy scrambled to come up with a feeble excuse

Timothy felt like walking on thin ice every day. He felt compelled to defend Lily for his survival.

Timothy smiled sheepishly and replied briefly, “It’s nothing much. Mr. Fulton invited Mrs. Fulton to dinner but was rejected.”
