Chapter 93 

Lily was utterly disheartened. She sat on the couch, wrapped in sunlight in the comfortably warm office. Yet cold sweat beaded on her forehead. 

Bobby turned his head away from Xavier, giving her discreet glances to signal her. But she sat unmoved, her hands clenched into fists on her lap, her nails digging into her palms. He was pushing her to serve as a cover, convinced that the Joyner family needed the Fulton family’s backing, especially since Sarah would never be accepted by the Fulton family. She’d never realized Xavier could be so unreasonable. 

“Xavier, you know Lily. She’s surely just asking you to help her family. But if you ask me, a man doesn’t need to take orders from his wife. Just do what you think is best,” Bobby said, attempting to play things off when he noticed Lily’s silence. 

He gave a dry laugh, looking over to Xavier. 

But Xavier continued staring at Lily, clearly wanting her to say it herself if she would let him help her family or not. 

“Lily!” Bobby, growing impatient, called her name sharply. 

“How long do you intend to keep having him help the Joyner family?” Expressionless, Lily broke eye contact with Xavier and looked directly at Bobby. 

“What kind of talk is that?” he shot back, glaring at her. “Families are supposed to support each other!“. 

“But you’re not cut out for business,” Lily replied bluntly. 

Since Bobby had taken over the company, it had been on a downward slope. What had once been a family business capable of holding its own against the Fultons had, under his leadership, fallen into near ruin in just two short decades. 

Just two years ago, he’d made a desperate investment that had wiped out the Joyner family’s assets entirely. If anything, he was a walking cautionary tale. 

Bobby shot up, his face tensing in fury. “What would a woman know about any of this? I-” 

Then he remembered Xavier was still in the room and reined in his anger, adjusting his tone. 

“I may not be suited for this, but we still have Hayden, don’t we? That boy’s sharp. When the time comes, if you and Xavier would just give him a leg up, he’ll outperform me!” 

But Lily was unmoved. “Hayden has no intention of taking that path. He has his own plans, none of which involve Joyner Group.” 

“You!” Bobby was so enraged he could only point at her, speechless. 

The father and daughter were locked in a standoff. This, however, was not what Xavier wanted to see. His gaze darkened. 

He thought, “Lily, who gave you such confidence that you’d be willing to throw your family aside just to go through with this divorce?” 

The image of her gently calling Terence flashed through his mind, and his eyes glinted with a simmering intensity. 

“Xavier, would you mind giving me and Lily a moment to talk alone?” Bobby asked, moving toward the couch and gesturing for Lily to follow him out of the office. Xavier’s gaze followed them, cool and indifferent. 

Lily didn’t resist. She knew that if she didn’t give in, Bobby wouldn’t let it go. Having this argument here would only give Xavier more reason to laugh at her family. 

They entered the lounge next to the CEO’s office. 

The moment the door closed, Bobby’s long–contained fury erupted. “Lily, are you out of your mind? Our company is about to collapse. If that happens, do you think Xavier would still want you?”
