Ellis blinked, caught off guard.

“It’s just that…” She suddenly remembered the file Easton had given her. “Mr. Fox, as you know, my previous job was in a different industry. After thinking it through these past few days; I realized I prefer my old field.”

“Different industries, sure.” Maxwell replied, “but your responsibilities and promotion path are practically the same. And the salary and benefits here are better than your last two jobs.”

He didn’t get it. She wasn’t being mistreated. Everything about her role was smooth. Why would she want to leave?

He handed her resignation letter back. “I’m not accepting this. Take some time to think it over.”

Ellis stared at him, stunned.

Why would he stop her from resigning? If he was unhappy with her performance, shouldn’t he be glad to see her go?

“When exactly will you no longer be Mr. Fox’s assistant?” She didn’t mean to sound like she was prying, but her current situation was closely tied to his.

If Cleveland was truly being transferred, and Maxwell fired her, then his assistant position would be empty. But if Cleveland wasn’t going anywhere and she resigned, the position would still be filled.
