It was Sean's birthday today? No wonder Nadine had been so determined to get him discharged. At that moment, Brad's mind flashed to Nadine's reddened, pained eyes. He frowned.
Was she addicted to running away from home? Brad scoffed at that thought.
…
In Rose Garden, Nadine had no idea what was happening outside. She was busy in the kitchen, preparing all of Sean's favorite dishes.
After removing her apron, she and Avery set the table and called Sean to come and eat.
Sean had already forgotten about the phone call from Brad and didn't mention it to Nadine at all. Since Brad was the one who had upset her, Sean decided Brad should no longer be a part of her life.
With his left arm in a cast, Nadine helped him with his food. Both women had prepared birthday gifts for Sean.
Nadine gave him a set of storybooks and a collection of limited-edition figurines Sean liked, while Avery got him a new smartwatch with many more features than his old one. After the meal, she began teaching Sean how to use it.
After cleaning up the table, Nadine went to the kitchen to wash the dishes. Just as she was about to put on her gloves, her phone rang. Upon seeing the caller ID, she answered without hesitation.
"Mom?" She had expected Jennifer to call to wish Sean a happy birthday. However, Jennifer didn't mention Sean at all.
Nadine hated hearing that statement. She sneered. "Yes, raising me wasn't easy, so you sent me to the countryside to live with Grandma. I didn't even know how to use sanitary pads when I got my period at 13. It was Grandma Sophie who taught me!"
She despised the saying "Parents know best" the most because Jennifer had always used it to control her throughout her life.
Whenever she had any opinion of her own, Jennifer would throw a tantrum and force her to give in.
"Madam Stein, don't talk to me about how you raised me. You merely gave birth to me. You didn't actually raise me! If you called today to ask for money, I can only say I don't have any!"
