Truthfully, Nadine hadn't intended to add that last part. But, to make it crystal clear that she wasn't interested in Brad and that she had only come after him out of concern for Sean, she decided to be honest.

Since their divorce, Brad had been showing up in her life far too often, clinging to her in ways she neither wanted nor welcomed. As her words sank in, she noticed the hope in Brad's eyes gradually fade, leaving behind only a hollow, desolate gray.

At that moment, her heart ached, but she held it in and didn't give him any false hope. Then, she turned her face away, refusing to meet his gaze.

Brad looked at the cold, indifferent woman and suddenly remembered something that had happened in the second year of their marriage. It had been a summer night, and Nadine had come down with a fever. The viral flu left her body aching, shivering with chills, and coughing. Even the slightest breeze rattled her bones.

Nadine had laid in bed and switched off the air conditioner. Brad, however, hated the heat. He would shower at the first drop of perspiration.

After returning home from work and realizing that the air conditioner wasn't switched on, he turned it back to full blast without a second thought. After his shower, he emerged to find the cooling system turned off again. Irritated, he didn't give a damn about Nadine's well-being and turned it back on again.

Nadine, who lay in bed, pleaded with him, "Could you turn off the air conditioning? Or maybe use the air conditioner in another room?"

Brad scoffed and immediately lowered the temperature further. "Why don't you go to another room instead?" he asked apathetically.
