Ashley gave the question some serious thought. She knew she didn’t have the patience for taking care of a child, especially one that wasn’t her own and, truth be told, one she didn’t find particularly appealing. She confessed, “I don’t think I can do it.”

Nathan nodded, understanding her choice. “I appreciate your honesty, Ashley. You might not know this, but my own childhood was rougher than theirs. At three, I was snatched by traffickers, often going hungry, just skin and bones. Probably even less lovable than they seem. But I got lucky—a guardian angel rescued me, and that’s how I managed to thrive.”

Ashley’s eyes widened with sympathy. “Nathan, I had no idea you went through something like that. Is that why you’re so determined to help the kids here?”

Nathan’s gaze drifted to a little girl in the corner. She was quiet, her face thin, but her eyes tugged at his heart.

She reminded him so much of Nathalie.

“I felt a connection the minute I saw her,” Nathan said, nodding towards the girl. “That’s why I’ve decided to adopt her.”

Ashley struggled to understand, voicing her concerns. “Nathan, you’re not even married. When you are, you could have your own kids who’d inherit your talents and looks. They’d be perfect in every way. Why adopt a girl with no blood ties?”

Ashley pressed on, “Do you know anything about her parents? Abandoning their child suggests they were heartless. As the saying goes, ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ Aren’t you worried she might disappoint you with those genes?”

Nathan was unfazed. “She’s a good kid. I’m not worried.”

Ashley was anxious for him. “Nathan, you’re being too idealistic.”

Nathan beamed, standing up and offering her his hand.

She placed her hand in his, her trust in him seeming as natural as breathing.

Nathan gripped her hand gently, his eyes and smile full of kindness.

Ashley, watching the girl closely, finally realized she was a budding beauty. Though thin, her features were delicate, with eyes that lifted at the corners, giving her a fox-like charm.

“Nathan, I’ve decided I want to help you take care of her,” Ashley said, her mind whirring with possibilities. If she became the girl’s godmother, she and Nathan would have more reasons to be together. Maybe, over time, Nathan might develop feelings for her.
