Lily's face was pale, and she tried to pull Ethan toward the room. 

"Let's talk inside, okay? Not here..." 

I didn't stick around to watch the rest of the drama. I went straight home. 

In my past life, I'd always thought Jack's sudden stomachache was suspicious, but I'd been too blindsided to defend myself.

By the time I found out the report was fake, the rumors of me being the evil stepmom had already spread.

It was all a staged act by the two of them. 

That's why this time, I'd reached out to Dr. Wright beforehand.

I knew hospitals had their share of shady dealings, but Dr. Wright had a solid reputation.

Ethan didn't come home until late that night. 

I felt the warmth of his presence behind me and quickly stepped aside. 

"What's wrong with you?" 

He reached out to hug me but caught only air, his expression freezing for a moment. 

I took a few steps back, not answering. 

Ethan softened his tone, trying to explain. 

"I've figured it all out. I was wrong to blame you today."

"Jack's just a kid—he's mischievous and doesn't know any better."

"It's because his mom hasn't been around much."

"Can you just cut him some slack?" 

"Oh? So Jack faked his stomachache, and the fake report?"

"Don't tell me a ten-year-old forged that too?" 

Ethan frowned. 

"Can you stop assuming the worst in people?"

"The report was just a system error."

"That doctor was trying to shift the blame onto Lily!" 

"It was just a kid's prank."

"Lily's been beating herself up all day for misunderstanding you."

"Can't you just let it go and stop making a scene?"
