Over an hour passed, and after Cherise removed the final needle from Clara’s back, Clara, looking exhausted, slowly closed her eyes.
Watching Clara fall asleep, Cherise exchanged a glance with Hank, signaling him to step outside.
A few seconds later, the two were standing face–to–face by the window outside the hospital room.
Hank spoke first. “As soon as you got back, you’ve already started thinking about a treatment plan, haven’t you? Have you figured it out yet? If not, you wouldn’t have inade a move so easily.
“From the way you were inserting the needles and choosing the acupoints, I’ve seen something like that in old medical texts. Too bad I can’t carry it out yet.”
Cherise smiled somewhat playfully, intrigued by the mysterious boy before her. She wanted to uncover his secrets but also hesitated, curious to see what other surprises he might have hidden.
She had the feeling that Hank wasn’t just an ordinary orphan, or perhaps, he didn’t belong to the orphanage at all. There was something out of place about him.
One thing was clear. Hank meant no harm. He didn’t give off the same uncertain vibe Cherise had felt when meeting Rita for the first time.
Cherise was certain that Hank wouldn’t be an enemy to her or to Morris. In fact, she almost felt he was an ally.
But what exactly he was, she couldn’t say. All she knew was that, at his age, he had already mastered the art of disguise.
But that was exactly what made it interesting.
Cherise looked at him and spoke coolly. “You’re only 14, and there’s plenty of time ahead. As for the treatment plan, I’d say I’ve come up with half of it. The best approach is a combination of traditional and modern medicine.
“It’s unlikely for a chronic illness to be cured all at once. What we can do is give her hope and make her life as normal as anyone else’s.”
Hank nodded in understanding. “Okay, I got it. By the way, we know you helped cover Clara’s medical expenses. Maeve and are really grateful. Also, I got the message you had the nurse relay to me.
“The PK competition is next week, and I’d love for you to attend with me. I’ll need a mentor to guide me through it. The opponents are from Hesperia and Ritewood, and I’ve heard they’re strong.
“Winning the championship would not only allow me to repay you for the medical fees, but I’d also be able to put some money into repairing the orphanage.”
Cherise smiled and spoke in a calm, deliberate manner. “Don’t worry about repaying me for the medical fees. Just win the championship, and that’ll be enough.
“After all, you’re my student now. I don’t want the name of a prominent professor at Betrico University to be tarnished. When is the PK competition?”
Hank, sensing that Cherise had already agreed, grinned. “Oh my god, Ms. Leach, you’re so kind! Thank you! It’s next Wednesday, very formal. You should dress nicely, you might even end up on camera.”
Cherise scoffed lightly. “Fine, I’ll be there.”
As they were about to turn and check on Clara, a familiar female voice called out from behind them. “Hi, Mrs. Leach.”

Cherise turned her head and saw Stella, appearing alone, seemingly just coming down from the medical check–up floor.
Stella greeted her warmly, her tone very gentle. “It’s really you, Mrs. Leach! I didn’t expect to run into you here at Betrico Hospital. Are you feeling unwell? Or something else? Are you okay?”
Cherise, seeing Stella, responded politely since Stella had greeted her first. “Hello, Ms. Walton.”
Stella’s smile widened upon Cherise’s response as she walked a few steps toward her and stood in front of her. “I’m here for a pre–employment check–up. Are you okay? I didn’t see Morris with you.
“It’s been so long since I saw him when he was younger. We should definitely find a chance to catch up. By the way, this boy here doesn’t look like Morris… Is he your brother, or…”
Cherise realized the woman in front of her was indeed as scheming as Xenia had said. She smiled lightly. “I’m fine, just here to visit a patient.”
She pointed at Hank’s back and added, “He is one of my student at Betrico University. He’s a bit younger than typical graduates.”
When Stella heard about Betrico University, she was briefly surprised. “Oh, I just came back from Hesperia and didn’t know. I only found out at a gathering yesterday that you’re a distinguished professor at Betrico University, in the Traditional Medicine Department.
“You look about the same age as Lydia, but you’re really impressive! Clusia truly has a new generation of talent.
“I also graduated from Betrico University, and when I was there, the Traditional Medicine Department was struggling Now I hear so many top students are trying to get in. That’s all thanks to you.”
