Chapter 592
At the entrance of the obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound room at Betrico Hospital, Morris stood by the wall, glaring at a large poster that read, “Gentlemen, please stop here.”
He clearly wasn’t happy. He glanced over at Hugh, who was standing behind him, helping carry some things. “Who decided this? The woman who just went in is my wife. What privacy could there possibly be? Even her husband can’t go in with her?”
Hugh, who was still single and had no experience with such matters, awkwardly scratched his head. “Mr. Chivers, I don’t know about this either. I’m even less experienced than you.”
But he tried to offer some insight, “I think it’s because they’re worried that the dad might startle the baby during the ultrasound.”
Morris stared at him, his frustration growing. “I…You…Forget it.” He sat down on a nearby bench, clearly anxious. But he couldn’t stay seated for long; soon he was pacing back and forth at the door.
Hugh shook his head as he watched Mr. Chivers. “Mr. Chivers, I advise you to relax a little. If you’re this nervous just for Mrs. Chivers’s first ultrasound, what will you do when the time comes?
“My mom told me that giving birth isn’t easy, and you’ll probably pass out from anxiety outside the delivery room.
“I don’t see anyone else as anxious as you are. Besides, Mrs. Chivers is a doctor; she has experience with this. Pregnant women need a relaxing environment.”
After Hugh finished speaking, Morris shot him a glare. If they hadn’t been life–or–death brothers for years, Hugh would’ve been dead by now.
But Hugh’s words had touched on the very thing Morris was afraid of.
He knew all too well what childbirth meant for a woman, especially from the experience of his own mother, Hilda.
After giving birth to him, she died from complications caused by excessive bleeding. At that moment, he couldn’t help but feel an irrational fear creeping over him.
Just as these thoughts swirled in his mind, the ultrasound room door opened with a soft “click,” and Cherise emerged, holding an A4 sheet of paper and smiling.
Hugh was the first to speak, “Mrs. Chivers, you’re finally out! If you hadn’t come out soon, Mr. Chivers would’ve been in a panic.”
Cherise immediately understood. She saw the concern on Morris’s face and knew exactly what he was worried about.
“Cherise, you’re finally out.” Morris took her hand with a sense of relief, as if a heavy weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
Cherise nodded, tilting her head up to look at him. “What’s wrong, soon–to–be dad?
“Look, this is our first meeting with the baby. Just a tiny little thing, but the heartbeat and the embryonic bud have already formed, and it’s very healthy. See, this is the shape of the gestational sac. It’s oval.”
Her soothing words made Morris’s anxiety melt away.
Morris looked at the A4 paper Cherise was holding and softly said, “Let me see. Just like you, as cute as you.”
Behind them, Hugh was totally confused, his face scrunched in disbelief. From his angle, all he could see was a small black dot, pitch black. ‘How could that possibly look like her?‘ he wondered.
But he didn’t dare say anything. Mr. Chivers was finally calm, so as long as he was happy, that was all that mattered.
Cherise spoke up, laughing, “Where’s the resemblance? It’s just a little black dot. You won’t be able to see the outline clearly until the next ultrasound.”
At that, both of them laughed softly, their joy as new parents radiating from them as they stood there by the door to the ultrasound room.

After meeting with a Gavorian diplomat, Arthur returned to his office with Mateo. He had just sat down to drink his coffee when his personal phone, which had been placed on the desk, began ringing.
He glanced at the screen, and saw an unmarked number.
