“You’re lying!”
“Mayra.” Despite Emily’s attempt to hold her back, Mayra stormed into Gordon’s room anyway.
Upon seeing Gordon lying sick in bed, Mayra looked at him with concern. She reached out to touch his face, only to find it burning up. “Why are you so sick, Gordon?”
As she touched his forehead, she felt the intense heat once again. What had happened to him?
Mayra gently tapped Gordon’s face, trying to rouse him. “Gordon, wake up. Let’s go to the hospital.”
The moment Emily walked in, her eyes were icy. However, she quickly masked her emotions. “Mayra, where have you been all these days? Gordon has been looking for you and missed his competition because of it. Now, he’s running a high fever that won’t go down. I’ve been taking care of him.”
“Have you given him any medicine?” Mayra asked.
“I have. He’s been having a fever on and off these days, but he still went out to look for you.”
Gordon was lying shirtless on the bed. The moment Mayra touched his skin, she found it to be scorching hot. “His temperature is so high. Why didn’t you take him to the hospital? You might end up killing him like this.”
Emily hesitated to speak. “Do you think I don’t want to? No matter how much I persuade him, he refuses to go. I can only keep wiping him with. cold water.”
Hearing this, Mayra couldn’t afford to show any sign of anger. But inside, she felt both distressed and jealous.
She found a piece of clothing in the wardrobe and dressed him. Then, she
called 911 and got Gordon Into the ambulance.
At the hospital, Gordon’s temperature had risen to over 104°F. The nurse said, “If he had arrived 15 minutes later, his brain would’ve been fried for
sure.
“But don’t worry. We’ve given him an antipyretic injection. He just needs to rest and sleep for a few hours and he’ll be fine.”
Mayra sat by his bedside, using a cold towel to cool his forehead. Emily seemed entirely superfluous.
“Mayra… thank you for taking Gordon to the hospital. I’ll reimburse you for the expenses later. Maybe… you should leave first,” Emily suggested.
Mayra swore in her mind that she wouldn’t let anyone take Gordon from her this time. Not even Emily.
If it weren’t for the feeling of a soft hand in his palm, he would have thought he was dreaming.
