Chapter 81
The quality of the earplugs was awful. She could still hear everything. Nadia felt like her luck had turned. It was late at night, and it sounded like someone was crying outside her door.
After about 20 minutes, the police arrived. The noise outside stopped. She finally went to open
the door.
She saw the officers dragging Mick, who was barely conscious, into the elevator.
A female officer stood in front of her, saluting as she spoke. “The drunk has been taken away. You can relax now.” Then, she had Nadia sign a report.
Nadia sighed with relief. “Thank you for your hard work.”
The officer smiled. “If you’re home alone, stay safe. If anything feels off, don’t hesitate to
contact us.”
Nadia nodded. “Thanks.”
“No problem. Take care. Goodbye.”
As the officer left, Nadia finally let her guard down.
The tension in her body eased, but exhaustion took over. She returned to her room and collapsed onto the bed, falling into a deep sleep.
She massaged her sore forehead as she got ready for work the next morning.
Nelson handed her a bouquet of roses.
“I don’t want you to misunderstand. I got these to celebrate you,” he said. “Also, I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you were in danger.”
Nadia didn’t take the roses.
“Nelson, you’re being too kind. I know when the hacker attacked. You contacted a lot of people to help. It was just that the hacker was too aggressive to fight off.
“But still, thank you for the help. The people you sent delayed them for us. So, I should be the one buying you a gift, not the other way around.”
Nelson felt a little relieved. “I’m just glad you’re not mad at me.”
Nadia felt touched. She had endured so much unfairness growing up in the mountains and even more after marrying Mick. Nelson was the first person, aside from Eddie, to treat her like an equal.
“How could I be mad at you? I’m only grateful.”
Сполетат
“But I don’t want your gratitude.”
“Huh?” Nadia froze, instinctively looking up at him.
To her surprise, Nelson’s eyes were filled with affection, and the look in them was soft enough
to melt her.
“Nadia.” His voice was thick with restrained emotion, a little hoarse.
He stepped forward slowly.
They were in the back part of the hospital, where there weren’t many people. His movements became bolder. He reached out, as though wanting to hold her.
