Chapter 30 novel Seven Years a Shadow: The Stand-In's Escape
Eliza lost control of her body, crashing down step by step until she landed on the floor below.
In agony, she lay there, gasping for breath.
Suddenly, there were noises at the door as Isolde hurried down the stairs. Pretending to help Eliza up, she feigned innocence. "I didn't mean to break that cup. Since you can't see, you shouldn't push your luck by helping me clean the glass."
Eliza weakly moved her arm. "Stop lying!"
Just then, as Benson was about to walk in, Isolde slapped herself using Eliza's hand.
With a loud sound, Isolde fell to the ground beside Eliza, feigning tears, "It's my fault. You should've hit me. I'm sorry."
Eliza couldn't help but smirk. Benson could always spot a deceitful woman. In the past, he would've kicked anyone out who had ulterior motives without hesitation.
With Isolde's ineptitude, he'd see right through her.
Eliza tried to get up, but Benson's icy voice stopped her. "Eliza, you really never learn. Two years ago, you nearly killed me, and now you're using the same tricks on Isolde. How can you be so malicious."
Eliza confusedly turned to where Benson's voice came from.
She had nearly killed him two years ago?
But she was also close to death in that car accident.
She survived and without a moment's hesitation, she cared for Benson—using her own eyes to restore his vision. How was she being malicious?
Benson looked at the battered Eliza, a frown forming as he instinctively reached out to help her, but pulled his hand back before it touched her.
Thinking back to what she had done two years ago, he couldn't find it in himself to forgive her.
Benson clenched his fists, glaring at Eliza. "Apologize to Isolde."
"Apologize? Why should I?" she wondered.
Eliza lowered her head and shook it. "I did nothing wrong."
Seeing her defiance, Benson stepped on Eliza's already injured hand, making her cry out in pain.
Suddenly, Lucky, her service dog, rushed in from outside and lunged at Benson.
Benson was taken aback; he never expected the usually calm dog to be so aggressive.
