Caroline found herself struggling to control her emotions.

“I don’t need it,” David replied in a hoarse voice. “More people… are just more burdens.” 

Caroline smiled. “That just shows you’ve never experienced what it feels like to have someone by your side. You’ve always fought alone, with no one behind you.” 

David’s brows slowly furrowed. 

There was a hint of displeasure in his expression. 

Because those words had hit a deep, hidden part of him. How did Caroline see it?

“Caroline, enough,” David spoke, his voice sharp. “Don’t push your luck.”
