Chapter 289 I Love You, I Really Do 

Caroline pondered. Is he dreaming about me? 

“Caroline…” David’s brows furrowed tightly. “Don’t leave me… Please, don’t…” 

His voice was soft, almost pleading. 

That wasn’t something David Ellison would ever say. 

Caroline froze. 

Lying in his arms, listening to his murmured words, she felt herself…. 

Falling. 

But what truly shattered her was what he said next. 

“I love you… I really, really love you…” 

After those words, his expression softened, the tension in his brows fading. 

Caroline, on the other hand, trembled uncontrollably, her eyes welling with tears. 

She had heard David’s confession. 

Even if it was just a dream, even if he wasn’t awake- 

It felt more precious, more real than anything he had ever said while conscious. 

Love buried so deep in his heart that it surfaced only when he wasn’t in control. 

That kind of love… was priceless. 

Slowly, Caroline pulled her hand out from under the pillow. 

Empty. 

She stared at David’s chest. 

“I…” she whispered, as if answering his dream. “I wish I could love you too.”

Over and over again. 

She slept, then woke. Woke, then slept. Restless. 

Morning, Caroline walked downstairs, exhausted, drained. 

She hadn’t slept well. David sat on the couch, a box on the coffee table in front of him.

He was wearing a simple dress shirt and slacks–nothing special–yet on him, it looked effortlessly refined. 

He looked well–rested. 

Unlike her. 

She had woken up to find him already gone, but judging by how peacefully he had slept last night, he must have had a good night’s rest. 

“Good morning, ma’am,” Paul greeted. “This arrived for you.” 

“For me?” 

Paul gestured to the box. “Yes. The Brooks family sent it early this morning. They insisted it be given to you personally.” 

Caroline walked over but didn’t open it right away. 

“No one’s touched it,” David said casually. “It’s waiting for you.” 

She chuckled. “Something from the Brooks family? What are the odds it’s anything good?” 

“See for yourself.” 

Caroline picked up the box, flipped it open- 

Inside was a bank card. 

And a slip of paper. 

“Caroline, this is the money Nash paid to buy you.” 

Her hands clenched. 

She understood immediately. 

The Brooks family had returned the money Nash had used to buy her. 

What were they trying to do? Give it back and pretend nothing had ever happened? Ridiculous. 

With a sharp snap, Caroline slammed the box shut and tossed it back onto the table. 

David glanced at her. “What’s inside?” 

She didn’t answer. Instead, she asked coldly, “Was this your doing, or did the Brooks family return it on 

their own?”
