“That’s right.” Caroline nodded, her tone light. “I have to give you credit, Mr. Ellison. I hid it so well, yet you still managed to see through me.” 

David’s gaze was cold. “Enough with the sarcasm. Cameron isn’t someone you should waste your energy on. 

Caroline didn’t argue. 

To her, even entertaining this conversation felt like an insult to Cameron. A man like him–elegant, restrained, nearly flawless–shouldn’t be caught up in meaningless speculation. 

He was untouchable, someone to admire but never reach. 

Besides, he was her client. Their relationship was purely professional. 

Still, a thought crossed her mind. 

If Cameron and David ever stood against each other, who would win?

“I just think you’re a little on edge.” She smirked, pressing a finger against his chest. “David, if you’re going to be jealous, at least pick something more realistic.” Her tone was teasing. “Cameron and I? We’re from entirely different worlds. That would never happen.” 

David’s expression remained unreadable. “I’m glad you understand that.” 

She gave a light shrug. “If I have one thing going for me, it’s knowing my place.” 

Even if she weren’t married. Even if she weren’t carrying twins. Even if she were a legitimate Brooks family heiress, reaching Cameron’s level would still be impossible. 

David exhaled, voice quieter. “I just don’t want anyone trying to take you from me.” 

Her heart gave an unexpected jolt.
