Caroline instinctively moved backward. She’d tried to use her position as Mrs. Ellison to intimidate them, hoping the weight of the Ellison family name might scare them off.

Her mind raced. Who could be behind this? Who could have a reason to target her?

David? No, he wouldn’t do this. That left Elizabeth. But why would Elizabeth go this far? 

Taking a deep breath, Caroline said, “You know my identity and still dare to do this? Aren’t you worried David will hunt you down and make you pay?” 

“We’ve got backing. We’re not afraid,” Jason sneered, his gaze lingering on her. “Mrs. Ellison, so refined and delicate…” 

“Think we should have a little fun?” Sam suggested, grinning. 

“Maybe, but business comes first,” Jason agreed but then paused. “Though, honestly, who’d be in the mood after making such a mess?” 

“True. Let’s enjoy ourselves first, then,” Sam said, both men laughing sinisterly. 

Caroline felt her heart pounding. “What are you planning to do?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. 

Jason smirked. “There’s $700,000 on the table for your unborn child. If you cooperate, we’ll make it less painful.” 

Caroline’s lips trembled as she turned pale. 

It all made sense now–Elizabeth must have learned about her pregnancy and orchestrated this. The bird’s nest, the breakfast, and now this kidnapping were all part of a plan to make her lose the baby. 

But why? The child wasn’t David’s. Why was Elizabeth so desperate? Could it be that the Brooks family had known all along that Nash was the wealthy man from that night and were determined to prevent her from having the Newton family’s heir, fearing she might secure a higher status and a life of comfort through Nash’s favor?

“That’s right,” Jason confirmed. 

“I’ll pay 1,400,000 dollars,” Caroline said without hesitation. “Let me go.”

Jason hesitated, clearly torn.
