“Who’s the little glutton?”

Benjamin chuckled, gently tapping the little girl’s nose before taking her from Margaret’s arms. “Baby, you’re too heavy for Mommy to carry. Daddy will take over.”

“After we lay Grandma to rest, how about I take you to buy some tiramisu, okay?”

“Okay!”

The little one nodded and obediently wrapped her arms around Benjamin’s neck.

Benjamin handed a small urn to Margaret, his eyes soft with tenderness. “It’s been five years. Are you still scared?”

Margaret took the urn containing her grandmother's ashes and smiled. “Grandma came with me when I went abroad five years ago. Returning her to her roots is her last wish, and I can’t not honor it.”

“Besides, with you and the little one by my side, I’m not afraid of anything.”

Five years ago, Margaret hadn’t died in the fire.

The unidentified corpse that Benjamin had purchased from the hospital had, in the fire, died in Margaret’s place, giving her a chance at rebirth.

The time Margaret spent imprisoned in the hospital by William had been the most suffocating, despairing moment of her life.

Even worse than the three years of grueling drug trials, those days had shattered her spirit. She saw clearly how selfish, obsessive, and cruel William was, and how unworthy of her love he had been.

Margaret had only been able to get in touch with Benjamin through Anna, who had received a new cornea from Amelia.

Anna would often visit the hospital and pass on Benjamin’s encouraging words.

It was during her first wedding dress fitting that Margaret had borrowed a staff member's phone to call Benjamin and arranged to escape to the airport.

But at the last moment, William had grabbed her off the taxi and dragged her back.
