William looked at Margaret’s somewhat stiff face, a shadow of doubt crossing his eyes.
His long fingers gently traced her slim cheek as he calmly asked, “Where do you want to go, Margaret?”
Margaret tensed slightly, then responded obediently, “I want to take you to visit my mother’s grave. Remember, we agreed on this before? Before the wedding, you said we’d go tell my mom.”
William’s eyelashes fluttered, recalling the conversation.
Back then, when their relationship was as close as could be, they’d talked about their future wedding. Margaret had shyly said, “William, before we get married, you need to go with me to visit my mom. I want her to know I’m getting married.”
He had jokingly replied, “What if Aunt Wen doesn’t think I’m good enough? Will you still marry me?”
Margaret blushed and nestled into his arms, shyly saying, “No way! My mom will definitely approve. You’re so amazing, and you love me so much. You’re the most loving man in the world—she’ll wholeheartedly support us!”
Thinking back on that moment, William’s eyes softened, and he affectionately kissed her forehead. “Alright, we’ll go tomorrow. I’ll prepare some offerings when we get home.”
“Sounds good,” Margaret replied, her heart feeling lighter, a faint smile curling at her lips—finally, she would be free.
William was focused on choosing wedding photos for the ceremony and didn’t notice Margaret’s slight change in demeanor.
After selecting the photos, he went to the front desk to settle the bill.
Once he left, Margaret borrowed a phone from one of the staff.
“Margaret, let’s go,” William said when he returned.
After paying, he took Margaret back to the hospital room.
Today, William didn’t stay as late as usual. He only spoke briefly with Margaret, then stood up, saying, “Margaret, get some rest tonight. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow to visit Aunt Wen.”
“Okay,” Margaret nodded, her cane tapping lightly as she "watched" him leave.
In the parking lot, William’s expression darkened as he looked at the phone number forwarded from the photo studio staff in the text. He copied it and dialed.
